Astonishing: firefighters attacked by manager

Two astonishing attacks were launched on striking firefighters yesterday, badly injuring a few of them.

At around 3:20pm yesterday, one firefighter was injured when he was hit by a car outside Croydon fire station.

The Croydon Guardian reports:

A fire brigade manager has been arrested after a car ploughed into a picketing firefighter outside Croydon fire station. Stunned firefighters rushed to help Red Watch colleague Tamer Ozdemir, who screamed out in pain after being struck by the car.

Station manager Chris Young who is believed to have been in the car at the time was arrested by police. Mr Ozdemir, believed to be in his 40s, was taken by ambulance to St George’s Hospital in Tooting as a priority suffering from a serious injury to his pelvis.

The BBC downplayed the incident, not even mentioning that the man in the car was a Fire brigade manager.

Later at 9pm, FBU representative Ian Leahair was hit by a fire engine outside LFB’s training centre on Southwark Bridge Road.

He needed hospital treatment for minor injuries and another man was arrested, police said.

The naked thuggery of managers trying to coerce firefighters is simply astonishing.
Lenin has more.

LBC radio’s James O’Brien did an excellent expose of the management’s lies on radio, which you can listen here.

Update: A video of the second incident is now online

What you snivelling about? Your lot have wanted a bare-bones, no-holds-barred fight with the Tories/big business/establishment for years, there’s nothing the Left loves more than a good punch-up. Now you get your excuse to turn really militant and smash McDonalds and Starbucks up.

@ Blanco

That’s a VERY silly response and makes you look like an idiot.

Well said, Sunny.

Well done Sunny for drawing attention to this disgraceful incident.

blanco you should be ashamed of yourself.

Blanco really is a moron.

lol ok I was just kidding. Trying to get a rise out of you self-righteous lot. Like I’ve said before, the strikers are right and the management is wrong, although the strikers won’t get public sympathy by striking on Bonfire night ffs.

8. the a&e charge nurse

I’m astonished managers have not ‘out sourced’ their campaign of violence and intimidation.

Getting your hands dirty could prove a costly mistake, although don’t expect to hear about it in the Fail – these Churnos are too busy finding ways to tarnish people who actually save lives and property?

what a LOAD OF RUBBISH! you guys should get a life instead of trying to hype up non-events like this. Words like astonishing attacks are just poor reporting by idiots who don’t know what happened and hear things fifth or sixth hand and believing the hype and bull. You class yourselves as left of centre, your motto is “Liberal Conspiracy is the UK’s most popular left-of-centre politics blog. Our aim is to re-vitalise the liberal-left through discussion and action.” is this really the case or are you just trying to agitate people into being outraged and therefore supporting you. The managers of this site and your organisation should be ashamed of yourselves for letting your cause be sabotaged like this!!!
You are sick people, if you think this type of reporting is valued or wanted by a caring society.

@9
I noticed in your complaint that you failed to provide a link or other evidence to back up your little whinge. Please fuck off until you do.

@Jon

So if your manager ran you down with his car because of an industrial disagreement you wouldn’t find that astonishing?

12. the a&e charge nurse

[9] which material facts of the report do you dispute?

The arrest of Chris Young?

Or the transfer of Tamer Ozdemir to St Georges (which as is a major trauma centre) rather than Mayday hospital, which has the nearest A&E to Croyden?

9

You are the fire station manager and I claim my tenner!

blanco

People like 9 are the reason it didn’t even occur to me that you might be joking. SAD PANDA.

And I am rather self-righteous – one of the side effects of always being right 😉

Just to inject a note of reason into all of this, anyone got any proof that either episode was anything other than an accident (the police can arrest you for dangerous driving you know)?

Sunny, despite your general desire to frame things you are generally more sensible than to fall into the trap of believing that managers will attack strikers because the managers are evil, which seems to be the only evidence here. After all, Lenin’s Tomb is hardly a source I’d trust on matters like this – short of linking to the FBU or Brian Colman I can’t think of many places less likely to put a spin on things – after all, the firetruck injuring a picketer and a policeman certainly looks like an accident on first reading.

watchman

You can be arrested for dangerous driving – and it might all have been a terrible accident.

Strange accident though. I mean to drive into some one who isn’t crossing or otherwise in the road is rare anyway. To drive into some one of good health (firemen are relatively robust people) not in the road, fast enough to result in serious injury is even rarer.

Driving into some one you are in dispute with is not quite so rare.

margin4error,

Have you never tried to drive through a confused and angry crowd (in my case it was a crowd of Aston Villa fans – I think they had lost (Blues fans might say that was a safe bet) – and I’ve avoided that route ever since just in case)?

As to the coincidence of hitting someone in dispute with the management – it was outside the place of work you know, which kind of reduces the coincidence dramatically. If he had chased him down a canal towpath or the like (on re-reading this, admittedly he’d need a Smart Car to fit), I might think there was clear intent.

I think the balance of common sense should stick with innocent until proven guilty – or at least until charged with assualt rather than dangerous driving since this is the blogosphere.

17. the a&e charge nurse

[16] calm, balanced, and even forensic reporting for the managers while the Fail pump out propaganda stories about the workers – a dynamic that sounds all to familiar, I’m afraid?

18. Dick the Prick

The 2nd incident kinda implies the chap was blocking the fire truck.

Not only does blanco see fit to be deeply unpleasant when he’s got nothing to contribute, he backs down with a puerile LOL when confronted. What a shitty, craven excuse for a person.

20. Luis Enrique

I don’t think driving at a picket line (or even strikers trying to get in your way) can be described as an accident – sounds like criminal dangerous driving to me. Not sure if it can be described as “managers” trying to “violently coerce” strikers, either. Nor that the drivers of the fire engines who hit strikers should be lumped in with “managers” either.

I don’t think driving at a picket line (or even strikers trying to get in your way) can be described as an accident – sounds like criminal dangerous driving to me.

Sounds more like “attempted murder” to me… But I think Scots law might be a bit different to English on that point.

watchman

Driving through an angry crowd rarely leads to injury unless the driver gets angry and hits the pedal.

And I would imagine most of us have been both in the car and in the crowd on such occasions without such anger.

A court will of course abide by “innocent until proven guilty” because courts are rightly barred from using common sense and sensible assessment of the likelihoods. Human beings can do both those things however.

Exactly how much pressure has been put on management and strikebrakers to break this strike for them to behave in this way?

a&e @ 17,

I tend to agree with you – but I would like fair and balanced reporting of both sides, not both sides being represented in Daily-Mail-like ways.

Luis @ 20,

Do we know anyone was driving at a picket line – in both cases no-one says this.

M4e@22,

Indeed – but accidents can happen.

Oxford Kevin @23,

Kind of the point – it is an inconceivable situation that managers would be told to do this sort of thing (some would report it – remember some station managers at least will be sympathetic, being originally from the firestation floor). This seems to me to be interpreting facts in order to paint a narrative, with no supporting evidence.

25. Just Visiting

I watched that second video – and either I’m missing something, but after replayingt it several times, it’s seems clear that no one got knocked over.

there was clear space to the left of the vehicle as the policeman waved it in and walked away – as the camera panned, there was no one close to the vehicle until the striker walked in front and held his hand to the windscreen, amid jeering etc – by then the engine had stopped – at this point – no one can have been hit by the moving fire engine, unless they ahd somehow ran at the far side of it in the split second aftre it ruened in front of the camera.

Only then some seconds later do the police also put hands to the windscreen tio ensure it does not move forward and the camera moves to show the guy on the ground on the far side of the truck to the camera.

No one was run down at all !
