This video is hilarious. George Osborne is asked four different questions and each time he just repeats himself.

Either Osborne has nothing else to say or that is some serious attempt at message discipline.

That is quite funny. But I have to concede that it worked. One of those four answers – admittedly not sure which – was the soundbite on the news later…

I must say it was my brother who pointed this out to me.

That is message discipline (or idiocy), but how can the lady interviewing him not just scream “stop stop stop stop stop!”

If he knows that all that will actually be used of the interview is a short soundbite, then it makes sense for him – for any politician – to just repeat the soundbite he wants used, regardless of the question. It’s up to the journalists to stop politicians using tactics like that, either by refusing to accept the same answer over and over, or by showing the interview in full so that they look stupid, as he does here.

Well, it makes a change from pointless waffle whilst avoiding answering the question – just use the same answer endlessly instead.

One day we’ll have a sensible interviewer and sensible answers – but I would predict about 2050?

Tom Bradby told a story from back in the early 90s of interviewing Gordon Brown as Trade and Industry spokesman doing precisely the same thing – word for word identical answers – for precisely the same reason. He knew that all that would be shown of the interview was a 20 second soundbite, knew what he wanted that sioundbite to be, and so repeated it endlessly.

Good point all, I suppose this is ultimately not a post about politicians then is it, its about our press?

I can hardly imagine Osborne getting away with this with a vertebrate, but journalists appear to spineless to challenge politicians. Hey ho, I suppose its only soundbites journalists are interested in anyway.

If only there was another place to get your news… some sort of online community of interested amateurs. (I met someone who wanted to be a journalist last night, can’t say I was particularly polite to her about the profession she was joining, someone else off the Christmas card list).

What the interviewer should’ve asked was “Mr Osborne, how do you feel about the supposed double dose of good news today; strong growth figures, supposedly for a decade, and the credit rating, put at risk by the last government, underpinning a vote of confidence for the coalition government’s economic policy?”

Is it just me, or are most of the posters forgetting that in ’97, ’01, ’05 and then in ’07, that Labour MP’s, and the PM’s kept repeating themselves by bleating on about “Education. Education. Education.”, ignoring what questions the media was asking at the time. Yet then the posters probably ate up the repetition, believing that it showed how committed and passionate they were to what they were saying. Yet now as it is someone who isn’t wearing a red rosette repeating themselves, it is a sign of their idiocy and a reason to panic.

It’s just you. Nobody’s claimed that this is a Tory disease.

Oh, and “education, education, education” is dramatic rhetoric and a joke on “location, location, location”. It’s a bit different to using the same soundbite to answer four different questions in a row. Kthxbye.
