Secret Memo: Met wanted to please NotW

by Newswire

The Home Office abandoned plans to establish an independent inquiry into the News of the World phone-hacking scandal last year after a senior official warned that the Metropolitan police would “deeply resent” any interference in their investigation, according to a leaked government document.

Stephen Rimmer, the Home Office director general for crime and policing, warned that Scotland Yard would “deeply resent” a review of its investigation by the inspectorate and that it would send a message that “we do not have full confidence” in the Met.

• John Yates, the senior Met officer in charge of investigating the scandal, said he was prepared to interview Sean Hoare, a former News of the World journalist who told the New York Times that Coulson knew about the hacking. Coulson, who denies the allegation, said he would be happy to talk to the police.

• Alan Johnson questioned the conduct of Scotland Yard after senior officers told him last year that every individual whose phone may have been hacked into would be informed. The former home secretary spoke out after his former government colleague, Chris Bryant, said that police took no action when it became apparent his phone might have been targeted.

Think you’ve got your headline wrong here.

Anyway, I’m not too convinced about this one – the memo also stated: “My own advice on this remains that there are insufficient grounds to do so.” That the Met would’ve resented any interference may well have been part of the decision, but it seems the Guardian’s focusing pretty exclusively on that, which on this evidence is tricky to justify.

I don’t understand how the OP’s headline is warranted by the Guardian article.

It does seem extraordinary, though, that ‘Scotland Yard’ can avoid an investigation by claiming to have hurt feelings.

Oh, FFS.

I’m off to rob a bank this afternoon, and I now know I can get away with it because the idiotic home secretary says that it will only be allegations.

Apparently allegations mean noting these days. The police don’t even have to bother to investigate. The Met is now run by Rupert Bear from California. As Little John would say, it’s political correctness gone mad.

Please New Labour/tory (same thing) stop insulting my intelligence by saying that the media have no influence in the outcome of elections. It is quite obvious that both your parties are scared shitless at News International. To watch Gove and all the other tory pygmy weasels is to remind me of Blair and Campbell.

the Met didn’t not have an enquiry cos it would upset Notw, the didn’t have one cos they didn;t want the home office having their own one, wrong headline here me thinks
