Rod Liddle: Scots are alcoholics & druggies

Here is Rod Liddle’s latest “column” in the Sunday Times, which insults Scots. (via Graeme Stirling)

No doubt it’s political correctness gone mad that you can’t insult or disparage Scots without any comeback.

Just another example of why making him editor of the independent was not a great idea.

Thanks again Rod for showing us that you are not ready for prime time.

Liddle assumes that, seeing as he falsely claimed that black people are responsible for more crime than white people, he can get away with any sort of bullshit. And of course, he’s quite right to assume so – he is still handsomely paid for his xenophobic/racist/sexist (delete as appropriate, or, indeed, not) vile scrawlings.

I like Scots mutton pies, it’s a pity I cannot find them South of the border.

4. the a&e charge nurse

Monkeymfc seems to be slowly morphing into a latter day Duke of Edinburgh – he even admits he is a cunt (although not a racist cunt).
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/jan/22/rod-liddle-quip-auschwitz-millwall

But it’s not just Jocks who have upset the monkey it is bloggers as well – this in the Times, “Mr Staines is Bloggsville incarnate — the very essence of that vast network of talentless and embittered individuals tapping away at their keyboards in the intellectual vacuum of cyberspace, only occasionally leaving their computer screens to heat up a Tesco microwave-ready mini filled garlic and coriander nan bread with Indian dip selection (mango chutney, pickle, cucumber raita ©) before returning to spew out some more unsubstantiated bile. This is anti-journalism, and nobody takes any notice of it”.

Just when it seemed it couldn’t get any worse for the monkey after the election special ‘come dine with me’ (featuring Brian Paddock, Edgwina Currie and Degsy Hatton) it seem it has?

@3

Maybe so Mr Blogger, but do you only visit Scotland for the cheap booze and smack?

Methinks the PCC might like to know about Mr Liddle’s latest rantings…

O_O

Is…is this parody?

Rod Liddle has jumped the shark. Seriously.

7. Chaise Guevara

“Rod Liddle has jumped the shark”

It’s ‘nuke the fridge’ these days, thanks to Indiana Jones.

Err, isn’t this more of a dig at Sturgeon and her ilk who continually denigrate (employing exaggeration aplenty) the lifestyle choices of Scottish people? I think it is, you know. The clue is in para 3.

Remember we’re talking about a writer known for anti-authoritarian views. Especially, funnily enough, in the area of … lifestyle choices.

9. Dave Atherton

I get the impression that Rob Liddle is being ironic and his tongue is firmly in his cheek. It is more a comment on the SNP’s appalling state nannying.

On Liddle’s comment on Afro-Caribbeans was it the content of what he said, i.e. inaccurate or that he said it?

@9

It was what he said. Aside from all his “monkeymfc” posting on the Millwall fansite, of course….

11. the a&e charge nurse

[8] Did you leave your computer screen to heat up a Tesco microwave-ready mini filled garlic and coriander nan bread with Indian dip selection (mango chutney, pickle, cucumber raita) before returning to spew out some more unsubstantiated bile – just curious?

I assume, by the look of him, Liddle is somone who closely follows his idea of the Scottish diet.

@ A&E [11] Hehe. Yes, saw that too. No, that’s later. 😉

It’s a shame they have just ditched the Sunday Times Scotland, after the last election where the Tories failed they pulled the title and sacked the staff. A shame this lovely piece of writing isnt available online.

Is this a trend after the recent Radio 4 outbursts, and if so, what’s driving this anti-Scottish behaviour?

http://www.pcc.org.uk/

It’s not even an original joke. What is the point of this man?

As a side note, I like this way of getting round the Times’ paywall – take a photo of the article! Genius. The dead-tree press still has a function, afer all…

“the very essence of that vast network of talentless and embittered individuals tapping away at their keyboards in the intellectual vacuum of cyberspace,”

The internet does seem to send the mainstream media quite insane.

18. George W. Potter

@3 I’ve spent several fruitless years looking for mutton in any form in England. Nowhere seems to stock it. A shame because I’d much rather eat an old sheep than a young one.

What is the point of this man?

The papers have a bet to see who can hire the worst columnists. The Times thought Rod Liddle and Clarkson made them a shoo-in but the Indie pipped them with the Burchillator.

I’m Scottish and I thought it was quite funny. Unlike the humourless grumps at BellaCaledonia, who brought it to my attention when they tweeted thus –

Offensive probably illegal journalism, please RT

“Illegal!” …. and I see other Twitterers are calling it “bigoted filth”. Well yes, but quite funny bigoted filth. This is the worst slur on the good name of us Scots since… Any Questions a couple of weeks ago. We Scots ought to have more confidence in ourselves and really not care when an eejit like Rod Liddell churns out stuff like this. If we react it just makes him do it more. Grow up, compadres!

@19

How dare you leave out Mad Mel!

What makes Liddle so excruciating is that terrible germ of truth in most of what he says.

What’s the point of the thread again? Liddle’s nonsense here is about as offensive as ”there was an Englishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman” jokes.
Not particularly funny – but hardly worth mentioning on a political blog.

Btw Mr S. Pill. You might have noticed if you are a regular reader of Millwall Online that not everything is as it appears on that website. Most of the time most of them are just messing about.

A lot of it is like this:
”Oi Monkey man”
http://www.millwall.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=52490&posts=11

”We’ve had the pie mash wars now let’s put the record straight, east end boys v south London boys”
http://www.millwall.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=52493&start=1

Not everyone’s cup of tea, but hardly a sackable offence.

24. FlyingRodent

What is the point of this man?

To be as much of a dick about absolutely everything as he can, then blub and whine if anyone calls him a dick?

Really, his schtick is a) to intentionally offend people and then b) start squirting tears like a big sap whenever his peers rule that he’s being intentionally offensive. Boo, hoo hoo, poor persecuted me.

Here’s the Rod rulebook… http://tinyurl.com/kvtyr5

@23

Well, yes I can recognise off-beat banter when I see it but some of the stuff posted under “monkeymfc” was plain disturbing (see here: http://liberalconspiracy.org/2010/01/17/did-rod-liddle-also-post-these-racist-comments/ for detail) for example: “Surely if they’re fcking the Nigerians, Somalians etc the correct term would be ni**ermeat, rather than wogmeat? You’ve got to get your terminology correct.” Now, to be fair, Liddle claims he was hacked for some of those messages. Just like those MPs who get caught out on Twitter. An awful lot of hacking goes on amongst the great* and good**…. (though with the Coulson affair it seems to have a source).

*Used ironically.
** see above.

26. the a&e charge nurse

“What is the point of this man” – my guess, and it’s only a guess, is that young Rodders has taken it upon himself to say all of those things that he thinks a fair proportion of the population are thinking, but, in the current climate, are afraid to openly admit – and do it all in a vaguely amusing fashion?

The present “Och Donald where’s yer boozers” is fairly anodyne in the wake of “Trainspotting:, et al, and as Dick Puddlecoat points out is aimed primarily at a certain type of Scottish politician – when all is said and done I think the world would be a duller place with the monkey, anyway back to my microwave-ready mini filled garlic and coriander nan bread with Indian dip selection.

27. the a&e charge nurse

Oops, should say WITHOUT the monkey.

The grim reality is this:

“The number of alcohol-related deaths in the United Kingdom has consistently increased since the early 1990s, rising from the lowest figure of 4,023 (6.7 per 100,000) in 1992 to the highest of 9,031 (13.6 per 100,000) in 2008. Although figures in recent years suggested that the trend was levelling out, alcohol-related deaths in males increased further in 2008. Female rates have remained stable.”
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/nugget.asp?ID=1091

“THE rate of alcohol-related deaths in Scotland is rising – and is more than double the rate for the UK as a whole, figures out yesterday showed. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that in 2006, there were 13.4 deaths per 100,000 people linked to alcohol in the UK – up from 12.9 the previous year.”
http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/health/Scots-alcohol-death-rate-twice.3714009.jp

“Scotland is in the grip of a health crisis after research revealed that more than half of men and 30% of women drink to excess.”
http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2009/feb/22/scotland-alcohol-crisis

29. FlyingRodent

Trainspotting was a work of fiction, as is the idea that Rod’s piece is a satirical riff on Nicola Sturgeon. It isn’t. It’s Rod Liddle acting like a tosser again.

As he’s going to get his balls kicked for this – when the PCC inevitably rule that it’s inaccurate and offensive – do bear in mind that he fully intended to be inaccurate and offensive when he wrote it. I haven’t much sympathy, myself.

But urban Scotland IS full of drunks and druggies, Sunny. Haven’t you noticed, or don’t you go there ?

We’re talking about a place with the second-highest murder rate in Europe, where they’ve had to ban camping in their national park because of “violence and vandalism at drunken parties”, where almost a third of adults in the largest city are on disability benefit, where prescriptions for anti-depressants have quadrupled in 15 years, where suicide rates for women are twice those in England (and 50% higher for men), where primary school kids smoke scag or OD in the playground, where they throw small children out of tower block windows, where Nature’s majestic benefit dependency cycle can be seen in all its glory.

Is this any different than you’d get from Frankie Boyle or any other Scottish comedian – or to an English comedian playing to a Scottish audience?

About half the acts at this year’s Fringe made jokes at the expense of the ‘Scotch’ (sic) dietary habits.

You might want to download Richard Herring’s latest As It Occurs To Me podcast, which not only includes most of the usual jokes about alcoholism among the ‘Scotch’ but also refers to Scottish people masturbating into offal which they then serve up as ‘shaggeses’ to English tourists.

Well, *some* of you might want to download it.

If you have a thick ear for irony you might as well stay here.

@Shatterface

The difference is neither Boyle nor Herring have a track record (indeed, earning censure from the PCC) of printing racist/xenophobic/sexist bile. Both of those comedians use outrage as a tool to get across a wider point, rather like Bill Hicks did.

Mr S. Pill @23. I can’t really comment on those posts by monkeymfc, as they were deleted before I ever got to see them.
The actual words wouldn’t concern me completely. It would be the context that would have to be taken into consideration. There are sometimes games played on there where words are used in ways that a casual observer might just not get.
I sometimes didn’t even get – and I’m sure that Sunny didn’t. And indeed, there was often nothing to get. There are racists and EDL supporters on that site, and there are some people who are clearly not racist. And sometimes you can’t be sure one way or the other.

”Did GOD create the universe?”
http://www.millwall.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=52460&start=1

One of those guys is a practicing muslim. Can you tell which one it is?

Who knows what the notorious posts were about? I really don’t know.
Maybe they were being gross for some reason – just for the sake of it.
His excuse about being hacked seemed lame, but then it is a kind of private forum too.

Almost by definition, anything remotely critical posted about Scotland and the Scots is vile, racist and phobic.

It started with Hadrian, the Roman emperor, who had that 73 mile long wall built from coast to coast. Construction started in 122AD and the wall reportedly took six years to complete, sure signs of the commitment and the cost.

In recent times, even the United Nations is implicated:

“A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America. England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest.”
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1786945,00.html

Whilst I do think that Mr Liddle has written utter tripe in this particular column, his words do highlight the fact that in some of the large urban areas (Glasgow, particularly – unfortunately) there is a lot of social deprivation that does lead people into drink & drugs.

However, this is by no means a reflection on the Scottish people or even Scotland as a whole and has bugger all to do with the fact that these people’s nationality is Scots and hell of a lot to do with the fact that prior to devolution, Scotland got the very very thin end of the wedge in terms of investment. If Scotland had been given even half of the money that the South East of England has had poured into it since the 1970s (and most strikingly from the 80s onwards), then many of the factors that create these problems could’ve been dealt with.

As per usual, Liddle & his ilk gloss over this fact to promote nasty stereotypes about the Scottish and further embitter people against all things North of the border because that sells papers and admitting the failings of governments past doesn’t. Heaven forbid that anyone should concede that a large part of the problem has been the fact that successive governments chose to treat Scotland as an after thought when investing in transport, education, job/business growth or measures to end social deprivation!

Personally, I’ll be attempting to buck Liddle’s trend by job hunting for something in the creative or voluntary sectors in Scotland because I’d rather be up there than living this side of the border when the Tory’s mega spending cuts really start to hit in late 2011/12!

37. John Meredith

It’s not very funny, a bit lazy and predictable, but offensive? Really? I know we lie in the age of indignation, but surely no true Scotsman could be thin-skinned enough to get upset about this sort of broadbrush larkiness? And if he did, a couple of quick gulps of Buckfast would surely strengthen his wrists again before he succumbed to the urge to call the PCC.

38. DisgustedOfTunbridgeWells

Tiresome, tiresome, man.

Who said irony doesn’t work on the web?

Read the article. Liddle is not attacking the Scots or their culture- he is attacking the authoritarian tendency in the SNP. And rightly so.

Most of the commenters on this thread would no doubt be up in arms at Swift’s suggestion that the Irish ate their children…….

@39

Good grief did you just compare Liddle to Swift?! Words fail me. As mentioned before, the irony defence doesn’t wash because Liddle is well known for his racist and ignorant and generally all-round shit views on people who aren’t white English.

In summary:

“HEY YOU GUYS I’M ROD LIDDLE PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEEEEEEEE”

42. Chaise Guevara

@35

‘Fraid I have to agree with you on both counts there…

“It started with Hadrian, the Roman emperor, who had that 73 mile long wall built from coast to coast. Construction started in 122AD and the wall reportedly took six years to complete, sure signs of the commitment and the cost.”

I’m fairly certain that the wall was built to allow customs taxes to be enforced, not to keep the Scots out.

“In recent times, even the United Nations is implicated[…]”

Come on! The fact that the UN does a study of violent crime and Scotland comes out looking worst doesn’t make the UN racist, it makes Scotland violent (unless you have reason to doubt the methodology). It’s inevitable that one country will get the worst score; does that automatically give that nation carte blanche to cry racism? Course not.

On the other hand, I agree that there’s a lot of lazy racism bandied about when discussing our brothers and sisters north of the border.

43. Chaise Guevara

“Good grief did you just compare Liddle to Swift?! Words fail me. As mentioned before, the irony defence doesn’t wash because Liddle is well known for his racist and ignorant and generally all-round shit views on people who aren’t white English.”

Not known for the modesty of his proposals, either…

The only reason any people remain in Scotland is that this particular kind of puerile attempt at being funny – tired insults, then a wounded cry of, haven’t you got a sense of humour? – is less common here than among smug English gits in Metroland.

Here is a good example of the gulf of consciousness that exists between many Liberal Conspiracy type people, and those from Rod Liddle’s Millwall Online website.

The ”joke” is, that one of them is a muslim of south Asian origin, and apparently he’s getting married and so is sujected to a bit of (racist?) micky taking.

http://www.millwall.vitalfootball.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=52614&start=1

@45

The thing is, a bit of banter between mates [that when viewed out of context could look offensive] is one thing, but Liddle is a national journalist who has, as the PCC ruled, printed lies about black people in a national publication. He is thus a proven racist so naturally any of his other statements about anyone who isn’t white English are going to be looked at closely. As with his wife-beating caution[1], his sexist comments are similarly misguided. The irony excuse just doesn’t wash, frankly. Like many of his ilk he’s made the journey [pun intended] from left to right without engaging his brain one iota.

[1] For legal purposes I should point out Liddle denies punching his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach. He says he accepted a caution because it was the quickest way for him to be released. Which is of course what all of us would do.

Good grief did you just compare Liddle to Swift?

Not comparing the quality of the writing, but the intention of the piece.

“According to a recent survey made up by a friend……….”

Sorry, but if you’re responding to this with a straight bat the joke’s on you, mate.

@47

It’s like an article calling the Welsh sheep-shaggers. Or Somalians lazy. Or Arabs hot-headed. Or, going back a few decades, calling Jews greedy. It’s boring, lazy, stereotyping and fails to be even a bit amusing. Saying “oh he didn’t mean it” is such a tired excuse that I think even students have stopped using the Irony Defence.

49. Chaise Guevara

“Sorry, but if you’re responding to this with a straight bat the joke’s on you, mate.”

It’s not an either/or thing, though. I agree it’s humor, and admit that I laughed when I read that bit about the survey. However, it does also seem to cross the border from friendly banter into straight-up racism. I also allow that it’s very easy to do that by mistake, and concede that the article is hardly a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But it’s hardly overreacting for people to be offended by the racism.

Mr S. Pill @46. First I couldn’t care less what the PCC ruled as I don’t even know who is on it to make such decisions. Though I’m not saying that Liddle didn’t deserve some kind of rebuke for that.
You say that it might be OK for mates to mess about with words and make off colour jokes with each other, but did you look at that Millwall Online link I did?
The last one where one of them is getting married, and because he’s a south Asian muslim, they think it’s funny to post picture of an Asian dwarf, and mock bits of South Asian culture, suggest a muslim wedding will be boring by saying that there woud be ”no booze” with everyone ”sitting around reading the koran”.
One of them even asks him when is he going to have his proper stag night – ”the white one”.
This is all ”wrong” on so many levels, and is the company that Rod Liddle keeps. They can’t even see anything wrong with using the C-word copiously.
There is such a cultural disconnect between those kind of people and those who are appalled by them.

51. Dave Atherton

@Damon

While I have some sympathy with some of your points you basically have no understanding of white working class people (WCP) like me. I find the liberal use of the ‘C’ word ignorant too, but this is the internet no one forces you to go there.

“..and is the company that Rod Liddle keeps.” Guilty by association, surely this is authoritarian? WCPs have a very acrid/acidic sense of humour and it is the mark of acceptance into a group when they mock you to that degree. I would see it very much a sign of social progress that a Muslim is accepted as their friend and fellow supporter as they take the p155 out of him so much.

No booze, dwarf picture and reading the Koran, I am tittering writing this down.

The point is they teased him out of respect, rather than malice.

Dave Atherton – I was probably being too ‘clever’ and I ended up giving the wrong impression. I am actually less scathing of Liddle and his Millwall chums than I might have sounded. The point that really interests me is in the division between those people (who are pretty crude and coarse) and people who would find what they said appalling.

I have mentioned that website before, as I find it it such an anomaly. There are slightly sensible and clever people on it …. and Liddle himself, and there are also some out-and-out racists and EDL supporters on it, and they agree and disagree, but at the bottom of it they all seem to accept each other’s right to hold their opinions in a way that just wouldn’t wash on a liberal or left website.
Defending Liddle is a perilous thing to do on a website like this, and he does come out with some utter rubbish, but it’s the way he makes his living. I wish someone would pay me a salary for just knocking out some crap about ‘Mary Seacole’ or a lampooning piece about the Scots.
Like a few other people who have commented on here, what’s more interesting to me is why this thread is even here, and the people who do find Liddle truly appalling.
I dont particularly because I recognise that Millwall blog mentality that he’s coming from and how much they hate the (to them) wimpish left who get so offended all the time. They do have that song about ”no one likes us – we don’t care” and as much as I would chide them for their excesses (and did till they banned me for being too boring) – I don’t care for the soft sanctimonious left either.
You know, the kind of people who think Top Gear is so irresponsible for showing that driving a 4×4 up a Welsh mountain is fun.

very good…too cool
