As part of their ‘Big Society’ idea – the Conservatives want everyone to get involved in volunteering.
So clearly they must have lots of experience themselves?
Not the man who is in charge of the Big society programme himself – Francis Maude, according to his own words.
He is asked on Radio 4, by Eddie Mair, what volunteering he does.
His response? “Er, that’s a very unfair question.” (via Kevin Blowe)

Maude should be volunteering, then he might get a better sense of how little money organisations get by on – money that the Tories seem intent on taking away at the same time as encouraging people to volunteer. Is he aware that it costs money to take on volunteers – find them, train them, manage them, give them the resources they need, get them CRB checked, perhaps cover some of their costs etc.
I volunteer in a local youth club for 3 hours a week, that’s hardly a whole lot of time Francis, on your bike you lazy sod! :p
Either way it’s no coincidence that Big Society has the acronym it does.
I agree it s an unfair question. After all, MPs are very busy people.
Trouble is, they are no more busy than accountants, lawyers, engineers, mums, dads, bus drivers, factory workers, and pretty much anyone else who works full time.
Hence it is a farce of an aspiration.
Perhaps Maude should ‘volunteer’ the unspoken truth that it is one rule for council estate oiks, and another for a high ranking politico who helps out at the local church but is unable to recall exactly what it is he did there?
Silly people, he doesn’t do any volunteering because all volunteering opportunities were destroyed by Labour & evil health and safety legislation. That’s why it’s an unfair question. In a libertarian paradise he wouldn’t sleep so he could fit in all those extra hours of volunteering.
Isn’t this the sort of extra-curricular activity that Francis Maude is most interested in?

Oh, I know it’s all too complicated for ordinary people to understand, but then again Mr Maude does not appear to understand interview questions about HIS contribution to D-Cam’s ‘big society’ – leaving aside the mysterious work he does for the local church?
It would be easy to miss the first bit of the recording, “our obligations to each other don’t end with paying with our taxes.” In the case of Philip Green, the recently appointed advisor on efficiency, Lord Ashcroft and many, many other prominent Tories and members of the government they don’t even pass that test!

Maude really is a fucking stupid cunt, he wants to cut our public services and replace them with Dads Army and he isn’t even a fucking volunteer himself and he made a chunk of money out of MPs expenses.
Maybe he thinks sitting on the board of companies is volunteering?
