Govt abandons green pretence by OKing coal
The coalition is watering down a commitment to tough new environmental emissions standards, raising the possibility of dirty coal-fired power stations such as Kingsnorth going ahead.
Green groups are aghast that a flagship policy called for in opposition by both Lib Dems and Tories, and which they last year tried to force on the Labour government, will now not be implemented in the coalition’s first energy bill to be published this year.
Their criticism of the government’s commitment to green issues follows news last week that nature reserves could be sold off as countryside protection measures also bear the brunt of budget cuts in the Department for Environment.
Introducing a so-called “environmental performance standard” (EPS) for power companies would have restricted greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas plants and encouraged companies wishing to build to use more efficient technology.

This is hardly a surprise though is it? I mean the Tory’s were never serious when they said they cared about the environment and the Lib Dems don’t seem to have meant anyhting they said in opposition.
That said, I’m more concerned about the nature reserves than a coal-fired power station. Coal is relatively plentiful so boosts our energy security. Sure beats shovelling more cash into the pockets of corrupt oil states and Manchester City.
It was so predictable.
It’s at times like this that I want to join the Lib Dems just so I can have a membership card to angrily tear up.
saw this coming, the government dont give two shites about Green anything now, heck isnt the energy and climate department getting lots of cuts too?
so much for all Cameron and Cleggs green talk pre-election and the “greenest ever” pledge after it, all spin, rhetoric and lies, the only thing green about this government is the grass near downing street (if there is even any of that left)
Typical tories, no doubt they thought it bad for business and since most of them don’t believe in climate change the only surprising thing is that anybody was taken in by Cameron’s green wash.
I wonder how Huhne will spin this one, will he put it down to his opinions being misunderstood like his views on nuclear and being in a happy, loving marriage.

Don’t worry, I’m sure sending us spiralling into a double-dip recession will reduce the carbon footprint.

touche, I almost hope the economy does go back into reccession at this point, just to show up how vile the governments agenda really is
