The graph that has the Coalition worried
These are the latest approval ratings for the government, tracked by YouGov.

These latest figures were released by YouGov last night. The Coalition’s approval rating is now down to net +1 (approve 41%, disapprove 40%).
It took Labour around two years before they declined that much, after victory in 1997.
Is it any wonder the Coalition is afraid and trying to blame the coming economic downturn on Labour with these snazzy ads?
(but at least the BBC is on hand to help by showing it without checking its claims).
It’s worth nothing that much of the decline is down to wavering Labour and Libdem voters being turned off the Coalition. But what you won’t hear from the right is that Coalition’s extremist agenda is turning off independents very quickly. That line of argument only applies to Labour you see.

The article made sense until the word “extremist”.
The phrase “the coming economic downturn” is just hilarious. Thank you for a much-needed laugh, Sunny!
It will be interesting to see the local government election results next year. If the Lib Dem’s are wiped out, which with poll results like this is highly possible, will cracks within the coalition begin to deepen?
Shock Horror!
Government elected with small majority less popular after a few months than government elected with large majority.
Film at 11.
Government elected with small majority less popular after a few months than government elected with large majority.
Even someone as pedantic as you Tim W would have acknowledged that the “government” comprises of two parties that together won the election handsomely.
“government” comprises of two parties that together won the election handsomely.
Err, no.
Labour seats 97: 418.
Coalition seats 2010: 363.
The difference in the majority is some 100 seats or so…..
Tim
The poll doesn’t count seats – it counts percentages.
So, are you saying the coalition got a smaller % of the vote in 2010 than labour 1997?
Aha!
“The poll doesn’t count seats – it counts percentages. ”
A proper refutation of my point. Well done, yes, I’ll just wander round the back of the bike shed to lick my wounds….
@6 – but Labour’s 97 result was one of the most emphatic results. So you can’t hold it as a benchmark for a simply ‘hansom’ majority. That’s the yardstick for a whitewash.
@2 Yes hilarious. Isn’t it. That we are just coming out of a rescession just for the new government to plunge us straight back in. Ha ha ha ha. The downturn in 98 was a global downturn – and one that regulation of the banks would have done something to avert, something the Tories would have been even further away from than Labour. Thats not to absolve Labour of course, they (like so many global governments) refused to listen to disenting voices while the cash was piling up. But the Tories wouldn’t have done anything to avert it either. It will be interesting to see how its spun if the shit does hit the fan and other countries still get healthier.
@8 answer the question before the sarcasm.
T’ain’t sarcasm.
It’s an admission that he’s right and I’m wrong.
Capisce?
http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/blog/voting-intention/yougov
Yougov have conducted five polls this month, in which the Tories have 41-44%, averaging 42%. Their lead over Labour is ~ 6%.
Their first five polls in May put the Tories on 34-35%, averaging 35%. Their lead over Labour was ~ 6%.
Even if the coalition is worried, I do not suppose that the Tories are.
I suppose the major effect will be to discourage the LibDems from breaking from the Tories and risking another election in the immediate future.
