Just Do It: Behind the rise of climate activism

In early 2009, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Emily James began filming the clandestine activities of several groups of environmental civil disobedient activists in the UK. She focused on three loose groups: Climate Camp, Climate Rush and Plane Stupid.

Allowed unprecedented access, her footage shows us the people behind the politics, providing the often overlooked human element to their story as we watch them take on the combined forces of global capitalism, run-away climate change and the pesky metropolitan police.

Just Do It is currently in post-production and will be released in early 2011.

The producers plan to released it under a Creative Commons, non-commercial license and distribute it via free internet downloads, free-ish DVDs, film festivals and guerrilla screenings.

They are also asking for donations to help fund the post-production of the film, and explain why it’s important.

No comments? Is it because nobody wants to say what a load of nonsense such groups are? Particularly Plane Stupid. They once closed Stanstead Airport all morning by invading the runway and chaining themselves to fences.
How annoying was that? Can you imagine if you’d got up at the crack of dawn and gone to Stanstead for an early morning flight, only for that to happen, and still be hanging around in the terminal in the late afternoon waiting for information of your rescheduled flight?
But you would have ‘been educated’ about your selfishness. I suppose you could find some comfort in that.

I’m sure it will be most entertaining.

But I will not be donating.

damon, as I said elsewhere in reply to you, I’d rather have people who take the time out and the have the courage to do direct action than have armchair keyboard warriors on my side.

Plane Stupid’s aim is to keep the environmental catastrophe on the agenda. Those of us who see it as a big issue will applaud it, those who don’t, won’t. I’m not surprised climate change deniers like yourself don’t like it.

I’m not a climate change denier. No need to make things up.
I’m a climate change ”don’t knower” because the science is way over my head.
But am willing to agree with the majority of scientists who say that it is happening and is man made.

The thing is, I do not make a direct connection between governments and industry having to come up with some answers and solutions to this huge problem ….. and these direct action type people who go chaining themselves to things.

That is the sum of my ”denial”, and one that I mentioned this time last year when I commented on LC about my two visits to climate camp on Blackheath – even sitting on on a couple of sessions in the tents.

It would be interesting to hear from people how forgiving they would be if they went through the upheaval of getting up in the early hours of the morning, made the long treck out to some distant airport, aiming to get there two hours before flying, only to find that when you got there everything was in chaos because some smarmy middle class twats had decided today was the day for another ”lesson” for the general public and closed down the airport.

And you missed your connecting flight from Amsterdam, and now all your plans were in tatters? Because this is what Plane Stupid did. And you had to backtrack all the way home and were told to come back tomorow.

Let’s not polarise every discussion with George Bush like ”with us or agin us” type arguments. I am all for protesting injustices and worthy causes – but will not become an ”Ultra” (you know, like those immature ultra loyal football fans that they have in Italy and Argentina).

Sunny certainly wouldn’t like it if one of his globetrotting jaunts was disrupted! ;-)
