I realise you’re being sarcastic, but in case people take it literally the reason was his ability to hold the ball up and bring the more skilful players into play, as he did when initially recalled back in 2007 and does when he has confidence in himself. Was also popular with other strikers because of this.

Unpleasant sounding idiot, but can I point out that from the quotations Mr Buckingham never actually wrote it was because we had non-white players that we lost (perhaps implied it, but I doubt this would stand up in court). His attack was on multiculturalism, which he clearly is unable to understand and equates with positive discrimination (his chosing people from ‘favoured minorities’ line), which he might think was responsible for picking the squad, but I don’t know.

The other thing to note is that we only have quotes out of context (as far as I can tell) here. Before we label someone as claiming England would be better with all white players it might be good to confirm this was the message of the whole article.

Mr Buckingham still strikes me as unpleasant and ignorant, and quite possibly capable of something as racist as blaming losing a football match on the skin tone of the players, but select quotes which show him not quite saying that are enough to say he did for certain. Although they have convinced me he is not worth worrying about.

Rooney’s family probably arrived on these shores around the same time as Defoe’s anyway as he is of Irish Catholic extraction.
