Oona King unveils strong support against Ken
Two days before the closing date for nominations for the London Labour Mayoral candidate, Oona King has revealed that she is backed by 11 MPs across London.

Her endorsements include Siobhan McDonagh from the outer London seat Mitcham & Morden and Rushanara Ali from the inner-London seat of Bethnal Green & Bow.
Oona King’s endorsements, significantly, are twice that of the number of London Labour MPs supporting Ken Livingstone. Ken is so far the only other Labour candidate in the race.
The campaign is being chaired by Jim Fitzpatrick MP (Poplar & Limehouse), with Joan Ruddock MP (Lewisham Deptford) as vice chair.
The other seven MPs endorsing Oona are: Kate Hoey (Vauxhall), Stephen Timms (East Ham), Margaret Hodge (Barking), Mike Gapes (Ilford South), Heidi Alexander (Lewisham East), Stella Creasy (Walthamstow), Andy Love (Edmonton).
Jim Fitzpatrick said:
Today, along with many of our MP colleagues from London, we will announce our endorsement and support of Oona King to be Labour’s candidate for the 2012 Mayoral elections.
Like me they are convinced that her offer to London would represent a future where our prosperity and our incredible culture is shared and enjoyed by all; a less stressful place to live and work; and a city where in tough times communities are empowered to come together rather than drift apart.
The campaign says more endorsements will be announced in coming days.
But Oona King’s campaign has been criticised for being short on policy detail and ideas.
To counter that she released policy proposals on housing, saying:
- She would create a compulsory register for all private sector landlords in order to set minimum housing standards.
- She would re-introduce the requirement to ensure that of all new developments, 50 per cent of the new homes built will be social housing.

No surprise here. Oona King was always going to be the establishment candidate.
I just wonder which way Diane Abbot will jump. The leadership race will add to her already strong profile to give her the biggest clout of any London MP. Let’s hope she actively declares for Ken.
Or if not Ken, then anybody apart from a Blairite warmonger like Oona King!
Also, they aren’t really her policies either are they?
Of the two that she’s announced, one is a Ken Livingstone policy from his last term, and the other is a chunk of the Labour government’s legislation on HMOs, which the coalition shelved. Neither does anything to dispel the prevalent impression of her as someone without ideas of her own. When will she come up with a genuinely original policy idea?
Oona King supported by that cowardly hypocrite Kate Hoey?
F**k that!!!
I can’t think of a more depressing front runner to put up to get rid of Boris Johnson.
Okay, maybe Charles Clarke.
Ken should stand for Mayor of Tower Hamlets.
Without wanting to be too dismissive, I think this is more of a vanity project a serious campaign.
Oona King lacks any sort of popular support amongst the grass roots, and a strong and energised grass roots campaign is our only chance of stopping the Tories from buying the election.
Or take Kate Hoey. The problem isn’t that she’s a ‘coward’ as somebody above said. The problem is that she’s the only woman in London to support fox hunting!
My prediction is that Ken will beat Oona easily and then give her some sort of well paid sinecure to keep her supporters happy.
Trebles all around, as they say over at Private Eye.
Oona is good candidate, better than Ken.
Also she is not as Blairite as people make out . She is an independent thinker on many issues.
She also would be a difficult target for the Tory press including The Evening Standard.
Why do you think she would be a good candidate, Nick ?
As far as I can see she is pretty much exactly the sort of dreary career politico people know and despise.
If I’m wrong about that tell me why.
Your silence is deafening
Given the recent attacks on children by foxes, perhaps Londoners will be moving more in Kate Hoey’s direction on the issue.
Is this the same Oona King who:
Voted very strongly for a stricter asylum system. (very diverse)
Voted very strongly for introducing foundation hospitals.
Voted very strongly for introducing ID cards.
Voted strongly for introducing student top-up fees.
Voted very strongly for the Iraq war.
Voted very strongly against an investigation into the Iraq war.
Voted against laws to stop climate change.?
The same Oona King who rode the Blairtie tiger and couldn’t understand why she was not made foreign secretary after two years in the H of C?
The same Oona King who tried to play the race and anti-semitism card to save her seat in parliament and failed?
The same Oona King that still say she does not regret voting for the war in Iraq, despite the casualties?
The same Oona King, the professional politician who has never had a proper job and couldn’t run a whelk stall?
Do you know, I believe it is….
Christ, her or the “Kennist” Livingstone! What a choice. Lefties like me will have to hope a decent independent stands.
