Littlejohn apologises; admits not researching

by Newswire

Last week Richard Littlejohn covered one of his favourite themes ‘elf n safety’ in a column:

Just in time for the start of the World Cup in south Africa, a primary school in Essex has banned playground football. You guessed – elf ‘n’ safety.

Marion smith, headmistress of Thomas Willingale primary, in Debden, said she was worried about young children getting hit in the face by heavy leather footballs. There have also been complaints about balls bouncing into the road and hitting cars.

One parent said: ‘It’s appalling. How are we meant to have a World Cup-winning team in the future if they won’t let kids play football?’ Debden is only a few miles from the school where David Beckham learned his skills.
Talk about an own goal.

Did Littlejohn’s team do any research? Where did they find that “appalled” parent?

Because Littlejohn himself admits today it was rubbish:

On Friday, I reported that parents of children at a primary school in Essex were angry that playground football had been banned during the World Cup.

I’ve since heard from Marion Smith, the head of Thomas Willingale Primary, in Debden, who tells me she has only ever suspended playground football for a week to punish bad behaviour. She has asked parents to give children lightweight balls to prevent injury, but was devastated by claims that she had banned it completely.

Ofsted has commended the school for its outstanding commitment to all sports, including football. My comments were based on emails from parents and a report in the local newspaper, but the responsibility is all mine. I owe Mrs Smith and her staff an unqualified apology.

Not only admitting the story was rubbish but that his team didn’t actually doing their research before ranting about it. Surely a world’s first?

It’s not something from which so-called respectable journalists are immune either:

I think that’s rather sweet. Good for him.

Now, if only we can get him to confess that not all gay men are on a predatory recruitment live (but that he’d secretly like it if more of them were), we’re sorted.

3. Bernieis right

Richard Littlejohn does talk some rubbish. I can’t believe some people are so think to believe him. This shows he jsut reads a story then adds bits up to suit his agenda. Time to resign

If he’s that fucking sorry he can prove it by never doing such a thing again.

A lot of (apolitical) people I know offer insincere apologies all the time but their actions prove that they’ve learnt fuck all in fact.

Good for him, it does someone real credit to admit they were wrong and apologise.

there was a story about a womans son being banned from wearing an england on a bus. todays THE SENTINEL reveals its garbage.

LittleJohn has no need of elf an safety because he never gets of his fat, spotty backside to do a days work.

What a disappointing thread; where’s our usual crew of angry right-wing trolls to explain how Littlecock was, in fact, correct, you know, actually?

9. The Grim Reaper

Hang on a minute. Where’s the consistency that Liberal Conspiracy is allegedly famous for on this subject? Your website is usually the first to complain that the media never admit when they get anything wrong, let alone apologise.

Here we have Littlejohn (not a man I think much of, incidentally) admitting that he got this one wrong and saying sorry. Yet instead of saying “okay, fair enough”, you lot are still complaining. Just can’t win with you lot…

@9 That’s because Littlejohn is a complete and utter total see you next Tuesday. The new improved comments policy stops me from saying more.

Right wing toe rag screws up…..

Q

trolls to tell us how nasty we are being and how good the little twerp is. Never changes with trolls.

12. the a&e charge nurse

On 19 December 2006, after the Ipswich murders of five women, Littlejohn described the victims as “disgusting, drug-addled street whores” and their deaths as “no great loss”. He added that for prostitutes, “death by strangulation” is “an occupational hazard” stemming from their “free will” – now surely THAT must be worth an apology as well?

re grim reaper few people think he deserves any credit for over 20 years of spiteful propaganda. don’t confuse the word liberal with being all touchy feely and nice. i believe in treating the right to a taste of their own medicine. no mercy.

@10: Yes, Richard Littlejohn is a complete and utter cunt. That much is abundantly clear from over the years.

But at least he has apologised for his mistake. Better late than never.

15. Nick Cohen is a Tory

To be honest I despise Littlejohn.
But Grim is right, he did apologise completely and not in a weasley manner.
Nick Cohen has never apologised for anything and he has made many more mistakes than Littlejohn.
I do love Jonn’s remarks.
Although it does show you how the press works in this country. Write an E mail about banning England t shirts in a playground and you have a headline.
It does show that most , if not all, journos in this country are right wing c***s who never check their stories.

16. political_animal

Littlejohn is a reactionary and offensive idiot, but fair play to him for his frank and unreserved apology over this particular story. Yes, he may be criticised over virtually everything he ever writes, but considering THIS thread is about THIS story and THIS apology, it’s wrong to involve other comments of his. Now, if you were to write a thread on Littlejohn per se…

#12 Stewart Lee does a brilliant scathing attack on Littlejohn regarding his attitude towards the Ipswich murders, on the political correctness section of his 41st best stand up tour. I recommend a visit to Youtube pronto…

It’s a shame he didn’t end his mea culpa with “You couldn’t make it up… but I did”.

@8 – Is there a term for this, im not very eloquent but you know coming on a thread and complaining that no one is complaining? I like Godwins law is there a similar term for this?

It depends what you mean by socialism. The National health service is socialist, yet I see no desire, except from the right wing morons to destroy the health service.

Is there a great desire to go and fight in foreign wars on behalf of Anglo American Oil companies? Don’t think so. That is not socialist but The New Labour, lets kick ass is not what the public wants.

Do people want the end of the welfare state? I would say no, but they want it much better run, and they want the money to go to the real deserving cases.

Do the public love the idea of the gap between rich and poor getting larger and larger, and do the public love the bankers and think they are worth their ludicrous bonuses? I don’t think so.

Do the public trust the large Private food giants and want them deciding what we eat? Do they like the idea of making it illegal to label food as having GM crops in them and stop the public from deciding themselves? I think not.

The coming battle of the next 50 years is how much power we should allow International corporations to have over us, and how much scrutiny we should have over them. New Labour cuddling corporations is not a very good idea. Let the Right wing do that.

Dam wrong thread sorry.
