Right-wingers target the Telegraph over Laws
Who is to blame for David Laws having to resign over his expenses? According to many right-wing blogs there’s only one enemy: The Daily Telegraph.
The newspaper published the story on Friday night and once David Laws resigned on Saturday evening, the bitter recriminations followed.
ConservativeHome published an article by Donal Blaney, a wingnut who idolises Karl Rove, titled: It is time for conservatives to boycott the Telegraph. Anybody with me?
“Don’t get mad, get even”, we are told. Norman Tebbit once said that that maxim was wrong in the context of politics. “Get mad and even”, he said. The sordid whiff of prurient homophobia disguised as concern for taxpayers’ money coupled with a galling display of cant from our political opponents has managed to drive from office a man who true fiscal conservatives were proud to have as Chief Secretary.
…
The Telegraph long ceased to be a serious paper of record. It long ceased to be the natural home for conservatives. It long ceased to deserve our patronage and custom. It is time for conservatives to vote with our feet. It is time for conservatives to boycott the Telegraph. Anybody with me?
The article is followed by a stream of “grassroot activists” loudly agreeing with the call.
Some of the comments are downright hilarious:
Also the Alistair Campbell angle needs to be investigated. Why exactly was he wielding a framed photo of David Laws on Question Time?
and
Damn right. Not just grassroot Conservatives either. No. 10 should from this point until a time when the Telegraph returns to its former standard treat the Telegraph like the Daily Mirror. Blacklist them. No co-operation. No calling Telegraph reporters at press conferences.
To be fair, there were about five commenters who thought the Telegraph was merely reporting on what was a good scoop.
This anger against the Daily Telegraph isn’t actually new.
Tim Montgomerie and Paul Staines have repeatedly tried to undermine the paper in the past. As they have done with the FT.
Last night, Tory Bear was also full of angry questions:
Last year The Telegraph undertook a fantastic public service in blowing the lid off the murky cover-up of MPs expenses. Without bias they gave all barrels to all guilty politicians of all colours. However it seems they haven’t been quite as open and honest in their tactics as it first seemed. Why did they not unveil these details about David Laws when they were orgasmically pushing their “Expenses Files” a year ago?
…
Or could it be that they are now willing to do someone’s dirty work using their information to carry out political vendettas?
…
It is no surprise that The Telegraph won the race to out Laws – they are now abusing their position as leading light in the expenses fight.
…
The economic security has been undermined by The Telegraph’s ego and flogging of a dead horse.
This is a win-win situation. May the civil war among the Tory right continue for a long time to come.

As I pointed out to ConHome and Tory Bear, if they want to apportion blame, they need to look very closer to home….now who is it that has form for smearing a Lib Dem politician???http://redrag1.blogspot.com/2010/05/red-rag-so-who-will-next-lib-dem-to-be.html
“May the civil war among the Tory right continue for a long time to come.”
It will all have been forgotten about in a few months especially if Laws is back in the Cabinet. If Laws had been on the left of the Lib-Dems this would have been much more dangerous to the coalition – there would be Tory right-wingers cheering on the Telegraph to the anger of the Lib Dems. Instead the Tories seem to be pretty sad to see him go (minus the UKIP: LIB DEMZ ARE ALL EVIL nutters).
This is turning out to be excellent spectator sport.
The Coalition isn’t yet a month old, and already the Tory cheerleading part of the blogosphere is like a gathering of headless chickens.
Blaney – whose blog is still walled off after the Guardian article – just doesn’t get it: the Maily Telegraph sells more copies when it does an expenses splash. Iain Dale has decided that “someone” is behind the whole thing, and the terminally clueless Paul Staines has just sprayed five hundred quid up the wall by betting that Laws would survive (Maggie says “just rejoice at that news”).
And Henry Cole is just blubbering irrationally. Ah, the sight of directionless and irrational paranoia, and the promise of it carrying on for a full five year term.
Or maybe not, at this rate.
Since the coalition was cobbled together I have thought there was an incredible amount of naivete in how the British press would respond. We are on our honeymoon period- the national interest- there is public goodwill towards us are all mentioned if anyone asks awkward questions. The subtext is do not critisise us just talk about kittens, cushions and fluffy things but do not mention anything negative. Well the right-wing press might play along for about a fortnight until they got bored with all the niceness and then they revert to type. They thrive on scandals and scalps and the bigger scalp the better no matter the political allegiance of the hunter or the prey. What paranoid fruitcakes on the Right like Blaney do not realise is the right-wing media intention is to split the coalition. What will be funny to watch is those on the Left secretly cheering on the right-wing media as they pick them off one by one.
Typical Tory vermin; blame the messenger. This explains why they see bias in everything that has not been vetted by Tory HQ.
The BBC shows the Tories up for what they are? ‘Left Wing bias’ close it down.
Climate scientists agree on AGW? ‘Left Wing bias’ cut their funding.
Economists think cuts will damage the economy? ‘Left Wing bias’ get different economists.
The Right get everything wrong because they lack objectivity. They only employ yes men and filter out anything that does not agree with their own prejudices. David Laws stood on a platform on no cuts this year. However, once in power and he surrounded himself with yes men? He conveniently changed his view.
So do they think the Telegraph should have been part of a cover-up?
So what they ae saying is that ONLY good news for the next 5 years. No story about corruption because it taints the government. It was OK a month ago.
Sounds like Nick Cohen and Martin Bright are in charge of conservative home.
Funny thing and surprised it hasn’t been mentioned here but yet again I have to look at the respect the left wing press are giving this coalition.
Also, this is from Tory HQ with the blessing of ‘some’ Lib Dems. The Tory press seem to be en masse gunning for the Lib Dems, anyone read the piece in Lynne Featherstone in The Mail today???
So who is behind this?
Thing is that Tory Bear et al think they are inside and not indespendable. If we’re to go by some murmurings on some blogs, this Tory-Lib Dem coalition was worked at really hard by some Lib Demmers and Tory folk around 6 months ago.
Now we know many powerful Tory backbenchers don’t like Cameron nor wanted this coalition.
I knew this would happen but NOT this soon.
This is just priceless. But there is an important point here., The Right wing hate freedom. It can’t be said often enough, so I will repeat. THE RIGHT WING HATE FREEDOM.
Now they pretend they love freedom, but like all brown shirts when it comes to it they want to censor the news. We should not forget that under Thatcher her storm troopers were sent into news rooms to take film that reflected badly on the police state that she was creating during the miners strike. This should be remembered when the same right wing loons are banging on about bias at the BBC. These people will not be happy until a pretty blonde girl wearing a Brown shirt and giving a Nazi salute introduces the news by saying “Vote Conservative”,
Also, this story reinforces something that I have long suspected about the whole expenses scandal. That is that there was an undercurrent of anti Labour bias about the whole thing . When the media bubble talked about ‘politicians ‘ they were really talking about those nasty labour ones. And this proves it because as soon as the co-alition get caught the very same people are winging about it being revealed.
Andrew Marr was on the Hay Festival last night and said that in the last months of the Labour govt he was sent many e-mails saying “you are not being tough enough on Labour Politicians.” But now call me Dave is Prime Minister he is getting bombarded by people saying he is now being too tough on poor old Dave and his mates.
Conservatives by nature can not deal with a point of view that they don’t agree with , and they spend a lot of time trying to intimidate any media that does not sing the tory song.
I support free speech but I despair when I read blogs such as this which come my way due to a search engine monitoring bias in the media, including the worst of all biased institutions, the BBC.
We have the usual loony beardy lefties saying one thing and wet right wingers stating something similar.
I am happy for the Telegraph to further uncover sleaze and corruption in our politicians. I only wish more account had been made of the corrupt previous government instead of booting them to the Lords, but the 3 + 1 +1 crooks on trial seem to have almost no media coverage, and certainly not on the bbc (as with the Israel Gaza issue this morning)
I hope Laws later comes back onto the front bench, having learnt his lesson(?) that being in government incurrs very close scrutiny. Now maybe other LibDem MP’s will also check their own financial records as they appear to have set up a corrupt home ownership system that they all seem to adhere to?
Could it be possible the coalition is under more threat from LibDem sleaze than any other factor?
On the other hand the disgraceful bbc support of a corrupt and incompetent Labor government is so far not only unpunished, but carries on regardless.
I support free speech
Why mention it then.

You really have to get out more and psychologically this does show classic paranoid behaviour.

Shame they don’t look at journalist fiddling their expenses.

Maybe Conservative sleaze but the Telegraph will hide those expenses for he top tories. Also how come the Telegraph never looked into the activities of it’s owner CXonrad Black before proper journalists did and they proved he was a crookj

How as the BBC supported a Labour government. Have you complained to OFCOM, have you any evidence.
Nut job my advice.
