Yesterday Don Paskini made a convincing case for Labour MP John McDonnell to be nominated for Labour leadership race.

I agree that the party needs a strong left-wing voice and John is the obvious candidate given that the only other contender has backed out.

There isn’t much time before nominations for the leadership close, so I need some help in putting pressure on these MPs to nominate John and have that wide-ranging debate.

These nominated him last time
1. Diane Abbott MP, Hackney North and Stoke Newington
2. Ronnie Campbell MP, Blyth Valley
3. Martin Caton MP, Gower
-. Michael Clapham MP, Barnsley West and Penistone – stepped down
4. Katy Clark MP, North Ayrshire and Arran
-. Harry Cohen MP, Leyton and Wanstead – stepped down
-. Frank Cook MP, Stockton North – replaced by Alex Cunningham (Labour) MP
-. Jeremy Corbyn MP, Islington North – nominating John
-. Jim Cousins MP, Newcastle upon Tyne Central – stepped down
-. Ann Cryer MP, Keighley – stepped down
-. David Drew MP, Stroud – lost his seat.
-. Bill Etherington MP, Sunderland North – stepped down

-. Neil Gerrard MP, Walthamstow – stepped down
-. Dr Ian Gibson MP, Norwich North – resigned
6. Nia Griffith MP, Llanelli
7. David Heyes MP, Ashton-under-Lyne
8. Kelvin Hopkins MP, Luton North
-. Lynne Jones MP, Birmingham, Selly Oak – stepped down
9. Michael Meacher MP, Oldham West and Royton
-. Gordon Prentice MP, Pendle – lost his seat
10. Linda Riordan MP, Halifax – endorsed Ed Miliband, but persuadable

11. Dennis Skinner MP, Bolsover
-. David Taylor MP, North West Leicestershire – deceased
-. Robert Wareing MP, Liverpool, West Derby – stepped down
-. Mike Wood MP, Batley and Spen – already supporting him

Other members of Socialist Campaign Group who didn’t nominate him
12. David Anderson MP
13. John Cryer MP
14. David Hamilton MP – has endorsed Ed Miliband but persuadable
15. Ian Lavery MP
16. Austin Mitchell MP

Possible
17. Lisa Nandy MP
18. Lillian Greenwood MP
19. Jim Dobbin MP
20. Graham Stringer MP

30. David Winnick MP

Definites (need 33 in total) confirmed publicly
1. John McDonnell MP

Latest news updates
– John McDonnell admits it will be tough.
– RMT union endorses him (comment by Harpymarx below)
– Observer’s political editor Toby Helm thinks John will get it

List update 1
Add some more names of potential candidates and changed Michael Meacher back to being available. We’ll know more tonight after the Campaign Group meeting

————

1. Some of these will no longer be MPs and others will have already declared for other candidates. We need to identify those and mark them as such.

2. We’ll need to name other potentials who may want to nominate him.

3. We need to call each one and find out where they are. My suggestion: pick one or two names, find out their office numbers, call them and politely ask whether they would be nominating John McDonnell and why it’s important that they do.

Then leave a comment or contact me to let me know what you found out. I’ll constantly update this list.

[hat-tip: @novocastrianrob and @BenCooper86 and @theday2day for some info. Update: Thanks to earwicga for lots of help]

I emailed my MP last night, as per HarpyMarx’s suggestion here: http://harpymarx.wordpress.com/2010/05/18/john-mcdonnell-to-stand-for-labour-leader/

Nominations close Thursday 27th May so we have to work fast on this one.

I just e-mailed my local MP as well. She’s brand new (Clare Short was her predecessor).
I did say time is running out, but we’ll wait and see.

Thanks earwicga.
Have emailed my own MP, who I also emailed in 2007 asking him to endorse John McDonnell then…but alas, no reply! So will be interested if he replies this time. But as I have argued consistently on my blog we need a good, principled and left wing-socialist to challenge the status quo of the Miliband bros. And John McDonnell is that person.

Cruddas isn’t standing then, Miliband senior keeps name checking him so I wonder if he will support David M.? Balls? So we will be caught between two Milibands and a Balls up….!

We need to get MP endorsements by the 27th May!!

Ian Gibson resigned in 2009, Mark Fisher stepped down. Bob Marshall-Andrews endorsed Brown last time, but he is apparently a left-winger.

6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 20, 22, 26 (deceased), 27 – No longer MP’s.

Tallies of nominations are being blogged here: http://labour-uncut.co.uk/category/inside/

“Tallies of nominations are being blogged here: http://labour-uncut.co.uk/category/inside/

But they don’t include John McDonnell potentials in that tally. It is just Miliband x 2, Burnham and Balls. I should think the Labour Representation Committee (LRC) will have some kind of tally very soon. Also the list Sunny mentions first are the ones who nominated John in 2007 and as we can see things have changed (and Alan Simpson is no longer an MP as well). John Cryer took over from Harry Cohen’s seat.

Three years is a long time in Parliament and we have a lot of work to do.

Did you know that John McDonnell is featured in a rap video on the Greenpeace website?

RMT backs John McDonnell for Labour Leader

It is not just MPs we need to put pressure on to vote for John but the trade unions as ones affiliated to the LP will be having a vote as well.

I’m amazed that no one is calling for overdue constitutional reforms to abolish protests over ministerial spending decisions by civil servants – civil servants ought know their place in the scheme of things by now:

“Civil servants came under increasing pressure from ministers in the dying months of the Labour government to carry out expensive orders that they disagreed with and responded by submitting an unprecedented number of formal protests in the run-up to the general election.”

Well Ann Cyer stood down at Keighley and the sent went Conservative anyway. David Drew lost Stroud by a tiny margin. Tristram Hunt is now the MP for Stoke on Trent Central. He may have written a biog of Engels, but I don’t think he is that left wing.

Bob Marshall-Andrews gone too.
Guess the Unite contingent all signed up for Ed Balls?

Also, Frank Cook is no longer Stockton North MP. He was deselected and ran as an independent earlier this month. He didn’t keep his deposit

Hi Sunny,

Alan Simpson is no longer an MP he stepped down at the last election. So you should cross him off the list as well.

Update:

Called Katy Clark’s office, who said they’d get back to me.
Paul Flynn: Didn’t say, have to email him directly.
Diane Abbott: Will know tomorrow
Emailing a few people tonight…

What is also imperative is the trade unions, and MPs sponsored by the various unions. If you want to see John McD. on the ballot paper then involve your union esp. ones in TULO. Find out as well which union sponsors the Labour MP and contact that respective union to find out what their position is and also explain why

John McD. is the only one of the challengers who is against the austerity cuts planned against the public sector. Support for Miliband x 2, Balls and Burnham is a vote for vicious cuts!

And the union bureaucracies should be aware of that before they sell out the members by supporting one of the other candidates (TGWU now UNITE members supported John McD. in 2007 but the bureaucracy went for Brown in the end!)

Keep up the good work Sunny. On the down-side… there appear to be only 22 “live” names there. So, yes, we need to lobby those people because the “definite” list is a bit short at the mo! But we also need to identify a further 11 (minimum) to come forward too.

Which centre-left figures might be persuaded by the case Don and you have made here?

I’m pleased by Toby Helm’s confidence that the nominations are there, but it would be interesting to see a list.

. Support for Miliband x 2, Balls and Burnham is a vote for vicious cuts!

That might be going a bit too far Louise :)

McDonnell is the Michael Foot for 2010… with all due respect to him, it would be disastrous for the party electorally if he was prominent for the contest. The intelligent choice is surely between the two Eds. David Miliband & McDonnell would be too polarising.

I’m trying to encourage our CLP (Worsley & Eccles South) to have a debate on the matter, and to get our MP Barbara Keeley to declare who she is nominating. Just waiting to hear back from her, I got to know her quite well during the election campaign and we do get on. However, she was the Deputy Leader of the Commons during the last parliament, and while a very good MP on a local level, she is New Labour to the core nationally! I probably won’t be able to get her to endorse John, but at the very least I’m going to try to encourage a real debate in our moribund local party. I shall keep you all posted!

Remember a nomination doesn’t have to be an endorsement. Somebody can easily say that they’re nominating John for the good of the contest, but may ultimately vote for somebody else.

21. sirrontail

MPs still in parliament, who weren’t listed above, who signed this pledge http://liberalconspiracy.org/2010/02/01/40-labour-mps-call-for-radical-campaign-policies/ who should probably go in the possible column:
Michael Connarty
Jon Cruddas
Ian Davidson
Fabian Hamilton
Dai Havard
Lindsay Hoyle
Alan Meale
Marsha Singh
Graham Stringer
Joan Walley
David Winnick

22. Billy McLean

Thanks for reminding me of that Duncan, I wasn’t quite sure!

Hand delivered a letter to my MP Albert Owen, will update on his response.

“and have that wide-ranging debate”

But not here then I take it.

Very good point Duncan, I concede that.

Might also be worth trying to identify RMT sponsored MPs? No reason to assume they’ll nominate in line with their union’s endorsement, but can’t hurt to give them a try?

I’m guessing that’s Diane off the list…

I think you should try getting Oxford East’s Andrew Smith on board. He’s a general centre-leftist, and has voted against the government on things like Trident and the Third runway at Heathrow. Perhaps more importantly the ‘have a debate’ argument is likely to be strong amongst the membership in Oxford and after the amount of work done there (which actually increased his majority), the argument might hold water.

29. Billy McLean

Well, been conversing with my MP Barbara Keeley over e-mail today. Seems that she’s undecided between Burnham and Balls! I’ll keep trying, we have a CLP meeting next week, which has a lot more relevance now that the deadline for nominations has been extented.
