I think you should consider the possibility that some aspects of the allegations may actually be defamatory. Certainly some of the material I’ve seen outside official media is of the nature of “Person did X which led to consequence Y” where it would be almost impossible to prove a causal connection between X and Y even if you could prove X.

We should assume that the Observer had access to a wide range of material and published everything its lawyers considered legally defensible. Beyond that, other material may arguably have some truth about it but it’s not the kind of thing that any media organisation is prepared to defend in court.

Whether you think the pressure “undue” or otherwise, this will be essentially what the Conservatives’ lawyers will be pointing out.

Bear in mind also that broadcasters have an additional responsibility to avoid partisanship, so running the borderline legal material that the Observer used isn’t even so easy for them.

A secondary consideration is that the broadcasters were not keen on focussing on a ‘so what?’ story. Apart from for the electorate of Sutton (?I’m working from memory here so editors feel free to correct this if it is wrong) I doubt there is general interest in Ms Stroud’s activities. So this would be a story about a left-wing paper producing accusations about the activity of a Conservative PPC (it would not be a story directly about those activities for the reasons Adrian mentions above). And the vast majority of viewers would as a result say ‘so what?’

It may swing a few votes (and I mean a few), but even amongst the gay community, Labour’s meme that the Conservatives were secretly homophobic is not really going to play any more effectively now than before. This is a piece of news that is not going to change enough minds or cause enough reaction to be worth broadcasting. The difference between this and say a Labour candidate claiming the Labour leader is the worst Prime Minister ever is that media and audience do not expect Labour candidates to say such things, whereas the meme of secret Conservative homophobia means the accusations around Ms Stroud are less shocking. Especially since she denies them…

Actually, so far as I know, she has not denied the specific point about believing gay people are possessed by demons nor the allegation that she conducted exorcistic prayer sessions. I respectfully suggest that the possibility that a person seeking political office believes gay people are possessed by demons does indeed constitute a newsworthy story. Of course, had she denied this specific point, you might be onto something. But, as I say, last I heard she had done no such thing.

I agree the story is newsworthy (if true – not because I do not believe it, but because I have not yet seen definite evidence). But nationally newsworthy? That is less clear (otherwise should we not have nightly stories about interesting accusations thrown at one or other of the several thousand election candidates dotting these isles?).

And her response indicates that she does not believe homosexuality need cures (which was the accusation – that demonic possession was an illness that could be cured): “”However it is categorically untrue that I believe homosexuality to be an illness, and I am deeply offended that the Observer has suggested otherwise.” (source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8660214.stm). It may be this is a case of weasel words, not mentioning possession, but the normal evangelistic line (and one echoed throughout the history of Christainity and beyond) is that homosexuality is like many illnesses, caused by demonic possession, but it is an illness – I suspect many of them view demons in the same way as bacteria, with prayer the equivalent of antibiotics.

The story is, in journalistic terms, about as hot as they come.

That a close adviser to David Cameron believes that gay people are possessed by demons and can be exorcised by prayer?

When I worked as a journalist I know that a story like that would have been like striking gold.

Would your editor have agreed with you? Especially on the weak basis of the accusations and the probable denial? Especially when you have a statutory duty of impartiality (I presume you were a print journalist, who did not have to consider this)?

Key question here is whether there has been local reporting of the issue, as this concerns a local candidate, not a national figure.

You are perhaps unaware that Philippa Stroud is the Executive Director of the think-tank, the Centre for Social Justice, chaired by Iain Duncan Smith. She is far from being “just another Conservative parliamentary candidate”.

As for your doubts as to the truth of the allegations, Philippa Stroud has been asked repeatedly over the last three days for a clear answer on the specific question of whether she believes homosexuality is caused by demonic possession. I have tried to get an answer from her myself. The only response has been “no comment”. That and – apparently – legal attempts to prevent further reporting of the story.

It is simply incredible that she would refuse to deny these allegations if they were untrue.

But the whole point is that there has been _no_ denial by Philippa Stroud of the allegation that she believes homosexuality is caused by demonic possession. She is – apparently – in the remarkable position of threatening legal action to prevent the reporting of the story, while refusing to deny that it is true.

Her refusal to answer direct questions about the allegation speaks volumes. It seems that however hard the Tory party tries to convince the electorate that it is no longer the “nasty” party, you will always get some skeleton come crashing out of the closet to remind us.

Regardless of the degree of homophobia being concealed by Philippa Stroud, it is very fortunate indeed that the good citizens of Sutton and Cheam have the opportunity to elect a fine upstanding candidate who is not a Christian fundamentalist.

If they have the sense to do so, they will transform British politics forever. (Not mad, just a small dose of election fever!!!!)

I don’t know whether Ms Stroud believes homosexuality is caused by demonic possession, although she has stated it is not caused by illness, which is normally what demonic possession has been historically treated as (I have no expertise in the current baptist churches beliefs which may differ as a result of scientific progress – rereading that sentance, it seems somewhat odd…). But I can offer, as devil’s advocate (excuse the pun) an alternative point of view, which is that she has decided to ignore an attempt to potray her as some sort of fundamentalist homophobe (which is not actually an accusation that has been made, only inferred) because she does not believe she needs to reply on this.

But in that case why issue a statement replying to an allegation that _hadn’t_ been made? Why delete her Twitter account? Why delete her Facebook supporters group? Why refer people to the press officer at Conservative HQ when they ask for clarification? Why put her lawyers on to the BBC?

Why not just say “It’s not true”?
