Telegraph deputy-editor down plays Clegg smear

by Sunny Hundal

The Daily Telegraph today splashed with the headline: Nick Clegg, the Libdem donors and payments into his private account.

Well it must have been a big story since it was on the front page!

Err, possibly not.

Here is the deputy editor Benedict Brogan on his blog:

And we have gone back to Mr Clegg’s un-redacted expenses file where we discovered the records of donor payments to his bank account we report today. So far he has been unable to produce an adequate explanation for them, or the paperwork to back up his justification. The likelihood must be that it is evidence of disorganisation, nothing more, but don’t know that yet.

So if the likelihood is that is is evidence of disorganisation, why not do your research and digging first before leading with innuendo and smears?

You might wonder how a man could hold his head up whilst perpetrating such falsehoods. Then you remember that he is a journalist – he knows no shame, and he is a Tory, so he has no moral compass.

Surely one for the PCC?

“… why not do your research and digging first before leading with innuendo and smears?”

Because fairness doesn’t sell newspapers — or suit proprietors’ vested interests.

This is a disgrace, glad nothing like that happens here.

How many firms are so “disorganised” that payments meant for the firm are instead paid into an individual employee’s bank account?

@5 cjcjc

It’s hardly the same thing. Given the scale of revulsion over the MP’s expenses debacle, it might have been better for people in glass houses not to throw stones eh? I see countering arguments already about Cameron taking free flights to Greece from Murdoch…. that’s OK I suppose?

I read this article and felt embarrassed for the Daily Torygraph, it is built on absolutely nothing and is nearly as desperate as all the Daily Fail tosh about Nick Clegg and his Nazi whatevers.

They don’t like it up ‘em do they?

It’s not smear, it’s scrutiny
Talking out of his orator
So cameron and the shadow frontbenchers are also been scrutinised ?.
Also why not mention the fact well before the election run up.
Perhaps it was kept behind to be used as political tool.
You Tories are fuckin hypocrites.

@5 cjcjc: “How many firms are so “disorganised” that payments meant for the firm are instead paid into an individual employee’s bank account?”

It is very common for sole traders to receive a cheque addressed to “Jo Seller” rather than to “SellerBusiness” and to shove it into their personal account. And to then transfer it to the business account. It gets the accountant, tax person and VAT person off their back, and helps the business credit rating (higher turnover).

11. Nick Cohen is a Tory

The real shame is the jounos from the quallities, including nasty nick, are part of the same conspiracy
