This is officially my favourite comment ever on Liberal Conspiracy.

John 77@18
Dear John. I take grave exception to the idea that I am less objectionable than Richard Blogger. I've been banned from DT comments by the Barclay Bros for being dismissive of their Leftie 5th column!
Suffice to say that Richard Blogger's reply to my blog leads me to believe that either he lives in that parallel universe inhabited by so many of the Left, that he doesn't understand the system for rewarding frequent flyers, or that your presumption that he is as anti-social as his party leader is correct.

Well done, Jimmy
A rational comment about BA
Makes a pleasant change for those of us who view BA as the lesser of two evils rather than heaven or the seventh circle of Hell

Let's take your comments one by one
"Of course I saw the recession coming and I am on record as doing so.

Well of course you did. Shame about, er, every major economy in the world eh?"

Is Australia not a major economy? Is Russia? Is Japan?
Most Finance ministers do not publish gloom and doom forecasts because such forecasts can be self-fulfilling

" Mr Pill is making claims based on his failure to read sound analysis which did not suit his political views.

Am I? Where? Any claims I’ve made are based on what I’ve read over the past 10-15 years in papers, journals and books. Maybe not the same ones you’ve been using, and I’ve not got any economics exam results to brag about, alas."

I have stated that I have written articles - he says he has not read them. Whoe fault is that?
OK - if I was a salesman, then more people would read what I wrote but to condemn me for not writing stuff just because he hasn't got round to reading reports and papers aimed at people with a higher level of understanding than his is, in my opinion, insolent

" I can do without his insolent insults.

Bit touchy, ain’tcha? I’ve insulted no-one – it’s not my style – as far as I can tell I pointed out that there have been economic bubbles in the past, and you got on your high horse using the old Blame Brown for Everything meme that’s been doing the rounds since the free-market shit so royally hit the fan.

Yes, you have. You have claimed I only started criticising after the disaster became obvious - that is an insult. I could do sums when I was four. AS I SAID there have been bubbles in the past but they have been one a century not three in a dozen years "

I do not blame Brown for everything - there is no need - wrecking the NHS, UK manufacturing, financial supervision and DB Pension schemes is enough to keep any critic busy for years

" This is not even relevant to Don Paskini’s original post

Well, quite. You brought it up ;) You can’t drag a comment thread off topic (as you with your last sentence of @17) and then moan when others pick you up on it"

Bullshit - I did not bring it up. In case you failed to read my comment in 17 it was a response to Sally @16. I did NOT drag the thread off-topic - I have actually asked for the moderator to bring it back on-topic

Next time, can you skip the bits that just require me to repeat facts to rebut them? I do have to earn a living so wasting time on repeating things that have already been said is irritating and expensive.

Bullshit – I did not bring it up. In case you failed to read my comment in 17 it was a response to Sally @16. I did NOT drag the thread off-topic – I have actually asked for the moderator to bring it back on-topic

Next time, can you skip the bits that just require me to repeat facts to rebut them? I do have to earn a living so wasting time on repeating things that have already been said is irritating and expensive.

London, England (CNN) -- After years of treating them like royalty, British Airways is asking the super-elite travelers who carry its Premier card for a little love in return.

Bracing for the first of two planned strikes by its unionized cabin crews, the airline e-mailed its roughly 1,200 Premier cardholders Wednesday asking for help protecting its reputation in the weeks ahead.

"We would like to call on you, as an invited Premier cardholder, to be an ambassador for the British Airways brand where you can," reads the e-mail. "Your support as a leader within your field would be invaluable to us during this difficult time. We simply ask that you continue to use your considerable influence to support our business."

No quid pro quo there then obviously.

Right-wing used to say that despite Labour policy on just about anything, Brown was a good chancellor.
I regard that as an insult
Maybe you don't, maybe you think that it's not insulting to say that we lied about the most important influence on UK economic policy.
If so, that is your opinion but mine is that to condemn us for failing to do something that we needed to do and we actually DID is insulting; "insolent" is merely my opinion based on how you phrased your condemnation of my alleged inactions despite my having, in reality, acted in the way that you condemn me for not acting. [for those with a specialism in epistemology - I did it and I object to him saying I did not when it was obvious that I should]
Yeah, that's what happened to the assumption of good faith! If you are acting in good faith you should look at research that predicted the dotcom bubble would burst and that the housing bubble was unsustainable (it hasn't burst yet because we have negative real interest rates but it will), that the debt bubble must burst (the CAB say that its clients will, on average, take 67 years to pay off their debts under a Debt Management Plan - that is one that freezes the debt and stops interest rolling up).
Lots of people saw the recession coming - the goldbugs were the most vocal which tended to hush the rational centre who did not want to be associated with the rational goldbugs (a few of whom were less rational). A majority of free market economists saw the recession coming - I have to admit that I was not nearly as forthright as Ron Paul (who will never be mentioned again by academic economists as he was right when GWB and they were both wrong) - that does not mean that I support his politics, just that I can recognise when an opponent is occasionally correct.

Of course I saw the recession coming and I am on record as doing so.

Well of course you did. Shame about, er, every major economy in the world eh?

Mr Pill is making claims based on his failure to read sound analysis which did not suit his political views.

Am I? Where? Any claims I've made are based on what I've read over the past 10-15 years in papers, journals and books. Maybe not the same ones you've been using, and I've not got any economics exam results to brag about, alas.

I can do without his insolent insults.

Bit touchy, ain'tcha? I've insulted no-one - it's not my style - as far as I can tell I pointed out that there have been economic bubbles in the past, and you got on your high horse using the old Blame Brown for Everything meme that's been doing the rounds since the free-market shit so royally hit the fan.

This is not even relevant to Don Paskini’s original post

@Sally 22
What old Tory chestnut?
Oh, you mean "read the post"?
Yes it does help if you are talking about the same question as everybody else rather than something in your alternative universe!
I am talking about Brown's destruction of the UK economy and particularly the record-breaking fall in manufacturing, the record levels of public and private sector indebtedness. I have not raised the subject of his encouraging a lower level of supervision internationally of the financial system, particularly Hedge Funds, because that is not actually pertinent to Dave Semple's attack on a Conservative MP because some member(s) gave him an upgrade from economy to business class on a BA flight when there were empty seats in Business class. I fail to see its relevance. Maybe your last name is Einstein or Hawkins and you can enlighten me as to the connection?
On Iceland - why did he use the Anti-terrorism Act to seize the assets of the Guernsey and Isle of Man branches of Singer & Friedlander? Somerled replaced the Vikings as Lord of Man more than 800 years ago, and to categorise Guernsey as a home of terrorists implies a sad failure to understand the origin and character of William's mercenary army in 1066 - the liegemen from Brittany and the Channel Islands were, at least relatively, civilised in contrast to the mercenaries that he recruited from across western Europe.

I am not an "economist" although I have passed several Economics exams (every one that I have taken) nor am I particularly right-wing - inside-right would be a better analogy - but I take great exception to Mr Pill's lies. I was pointing out that Brown was a damagingly bad Chancellor after his first budget (the windfall levy which got a short-term benefit but increased the return that every company wanted for providing water gas or electricity in the UK and the raid on Pension funds that created a substantial deficit in every law-abiding private sector pension fund), then at his wrecking of the NHS by fixing its budget at the levels proposed by Ken Clark followed by raising nurses pay without giving the NHS any more money so that it was forced to cut the number of nurses and then periodically employ some of the otherwise unemployed nurses through private sector employment agencies to fill random gaps caused by random illnesses, maternity leave etc at a higher cost creating a worse funds shortfall and so on, and the gesture politics on generic prescribing that raised the NHS drugs bill and transferred jobs to third countries. New Labour is now claiming a success in reducing the waiting list since 1999 - but no data relative to 1996! Why? Because waiting lists soared thanks to Brown's stupidity.
Of course I saw the recession coming and I am on record as doing so. I am not stupid. Mr Pill seems to assume that I am and so is everyone else. Nassim Taleb is an excellent salesman but his grasp of statistics is feeble.
Mr Pill is making claims based on his failure to read sound analysis which did not suit his political views. I can do without his insolent insults.
This is not even relevant to Don Paskini's original post - please can the moderator get this thread back on line or suppress the more offensive trolls?

Oh not that old tory chestnut again.

Could you tell me when Brown was running the American economy? If you could provide dates as to when he was jumping on an aeroplane and going to the US to run Lehman’s and AIG, and all the other American banks that have gone tits up. Also, could you give the dates as to when he was running the Irish economy and the Iceland banking system, just so that we can see all the booms he created.

Or maybe you would like to tell us about how Cameron was saying we should deregulate are banking system evem more than Brown did. Which ws the tory position in the boom.

Funny then, how few free-market economists pointed out Brown's failings in the Years of Plenty; indeed the Right-wing used to say that despite Labour policy on just about anything, Brown was a good chancellor. The Left usually said otherwise - for Brown was following Conservative (or neo-Liberal/Thatcherite) policy. And I don't remember anyone seeing the recession coming - with the exception of uberMarxists who see the collapse of capitalism around every corner (and Nassim Taleb, admittedly in the context of his superb treatise The Black Swan).
