New “coffee party” launched

by Don Paskini

In response to the right-wing Tea Party movement, a new ‘Coffee Party’ movement is being launched in America.

Its mission is:

“The Coffee Party Movement gives voice to Americans who want to see cooperation in government. We recognize that the federal government is not the enemy of the people, but the expression of our collective will, and that we must participate in the democratic process in order to address the challenges that we face as Americans. As voters and grassroots volunteers, we will support leaders who work toward positive solutions, and hold accountable those who obstruct them.”

More info can be found here.

Daily Kos reports:

“If you haven’t heard of the Coffee Party Movement, it’s a progressive alternative to the Tea Party that started less than a month ago on Facebook and has captured the attention and commitment of those who believe that our federal government is the solution, not the problem.

Local chapters are planning meetings in cities from Washington to San Antonio to Los Angeles (where there have been four in the last month.) The party (coffeepartyusa.org) is planning nationwide coffee houses for March 13, where people can gather to decide which issues they want to take on and even which candidates they want to support.

This summer, the party will hold a convention in the Midwest, with a slogan along the lines of “Meet Me in the Middle.” The party has inspired the requisite jokes: why not a latte party, a chai party, a Red Bull party?

But this is just the type of grassroots activism that can help Democrats offset the Astroturfing bought and paid for by corporate interests.”

Americans who want to see cooperation in government

Typical weak-ass lilly-livered American liberals. Cooperation? With who? The Republicans? They will never cooperate with the Democrats. Heck, there are a number of Democratic senators and congressmen who don’t cooperate with their own party: Ben Nelson, Blanche Lincoln, the “independent” Lieberman.

Fuck cooperation. What Obama, the Democrats and liberals need to do is to tell the Republicans to shine it up real nice, turn it sideways, and stick it straight up their conservative candy asses. Followed by: Know Your Role and Shut Your Mouth.

So a load of “progressives” are gonna sit in Starbucks sticking it to the man and “working towards positive solutions” ? And this qualifies as grassroots activism ?

I’d hate to see what a revolution looks like nowadays, a sit in at the Waitrose deli counter perhaps ?

You’re right, Twat Munro. I’ll be raising a glass of fair trade wine at my Islington dinner party in tribute to them. Or I might not, in case it offends Muslims. It’ hard being a bien pensant, isn’t it?

Re: 2

Where does it mention Starbucks? Can’t you even pretend to have read more than the title?

Ah voices from the Palin US right and the right of Thatcher UK clowns.
Many of the proposals put forward are no different that are coming from left or right thinkers about decentralising power.
Also I much prefer their approach to US tea party with their racist undertones.

I’d prefer ‘hot chocolate party’, get things funky and progressive.

Any takers?

There could be an excellent future exercise in mapping the sites of tea and coffee parties and seeing how mutually exclusive they are…
