Eric Pickles silent on Tory dirty tricks campaign
Conservative party chairman Eric Pickles continues to say nothing about the explosive revelations that CCHQ have have encouraged Tory activists to deliberately disrupt Labour party events.
Sky News today reported that the party is calling on Conservative Future members “to disrupt Gordon Brown’s announcement of Labour’s election slogan”.
In a leaked email to members, chairwoman Sophie Shrubsole said: “CCHQ (Conservative headquarters) have requested that Conservative Future members from across the country gather in Warwick to form our own publicity stunt.
“This will be a sign to the Prime Minister and the Labour Party as a whole, that as Conservatives we are ready for the General Election. It will no doubt act as a demoralising element to Gordon Brown’s trip.”
The story was first leaked by Paul Waugh at the Evening Standard, who published the whole email.
It quotes Sophie Shrubsole as saying she had “been informed by Conservative Head Quarters” of the last minute rally.
Eric Pickles recently said he would sack any party workers involved in dirty tricks during the election campaign.
Paul Waugh points out:
It suggests (assuming it is not a spoof) that the Conservatives are actively planning regular swoops to disrupt Labour events. Most importantly, it shows that CCHQ are directly involved, rather than allowing ‘localism’ to rule….
And yet Eric Pickles has been conspicuously quiet from saying anything on the matter, let alone taking any action on his own words.

Not entirely clear how this is “dirty tricks”?
If they were asking supporters to infiltrate Labour demonstrations, maybe – but they’re asking people to go and openly protest against Brown.
What’s your objection, specifically?
The key word is “disrupt” – as reported by Sky News.
That “key” word appeared only in Sky News’s headline, and nowhere in Sophie Shrubsole’s e-mail.
Given you link to Paul Waugh’s post quoting it in full, I’m not clear how you can believe it’s so “key”.
Going to try and tell me Labour’s never arranged for a group of its supporters to stage a protest near a Conservative event (if you don’t deny it, I won’t go and find the footage from Crewe)?
Can’t for the life of me understand why the tories think they need to do this type of stuff.
They are way ahead in the polls, they have a huge advantage in terms of money, they have a govt that has been in power for a long time and people are fed up. So why bother?
Perhaps they are not quite so confident as they make out.
“It will no doubt act as a demoralising element to Gordon Brown’s trip” – Ms Shrubsole’s assessment may be correct, but I doubt if it will be any more demoralising than the behaviour of these two ‘fraternal’ goons;

Or insipid support from this inheritance tax cheat (allegedly)

Childish and petty, yes, but it’s no less than I’d expect from either side.
I wouldn’t vote for any politician who considers themself to be on a “side” anyway.
I think it would’ve been far ‘dirtier’ if they hadn’t been the most useless protest ever. About 12 of them turned up with hand-drawn ‘Brown out’ placards (it’s not clear whether this was a comment on the PM or the status of their underwear).
I have to say, this seems to be a pretty big storm in a teacup. It’s just a protest; I don’t know why Sky are attempting to dress it up as a disruption, given if there is any evidence for that being the case they aren’t letting on.
