Godfrey Bloom is a UK Independence Party MEP from Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire. He is a fervent climate change denier and has made speeches at the EU Parliament stating global warming isn’t happening and dismissing the idea of Co2 as a pollutant. Bloom also records videos for his own YouTube account.

Recently he made a video (below) standing in front of a Greenpeace boat. He starts off by calling it a “fascist boat”, funded by “ridiculous middle-class, middle-aged people spouting junk science”.

He goes on to say:

This is a huge stunt for middle class people to have a little bit of a float around the world. The whole thing is a sham, the whole thing is ridiculous.

He then concludes the short video with:

And I don’t often say anything good about the French but one thing I can say – well done the French for sinking one of these things. Vive Le France!

There’s only one incident he could be referring to: the French intelligence services sinking of the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior in 1985 which killed a photographer and injured others.

Bloom is praising an incident that killed an innocent person and led to the resignation of the French Defence Minister.

Not long after he made the video, it vanished from Youtube. But a Libcon reader who had seen it in horror passed it to us. Here, we publish it for the first time.

Watch (1m 13secs)

Here is Wikipedia on the incident:

The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, codenamed Opération Satanique[1], was an operation by the “action” branch of the French foreign intelligence services, the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure (DGSE), carried out on July 10, 1985. It aimed to sink the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, the Rainbow Warrior in the port of Auckland, New Zealand, to prevent her from interfering in a nuclear test in Moruroa.

Fernando Pereira, a photographer, drowned on the sinking ship. Two French agents were arrested by the New Zealand Police on passport fraud and immigration charges. They were charged with arson, conspiracy to commit arson, willful damage, and murder. As part of a plea bargain, they pled guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to ten years, of which they served just over two.

The scandal resulted in the resignation of the French Defence Minister Charles Hernu, and the subject remains controversial. It was twenty years afterwards that the personal responsibility of French President François Mitterrand was admitted.

There is no other incident of the French sinking a Greenpeace boat. The above is the only incident Godfrey Bloom MEP could be referring to and praising.

From its internet trail, going by when some people have linked to it (on Facebook), I estimate the video to be made in December 09.

Others incidents
1. Former Tory peer Lord Monckton compared young Jewish activists to being like Hitler Youth.

2. A voter was harassed by Telegraph readers after their blogger James Delingpole published his email (with home address) to a Tory candidate asking about his views on climate change.

Update

The Guardian report that Godfrey Bloom says he “forgot” that a photographer died during the attack.

Greenpeace have issued a statement:

It’s extremely upsetting to see this guy saying those things in front of the Warrior. Our dear colleague Fernando Pereira was murdered the day the French secret service planted that bomb. It was an act of terror, pure and simple, and to see a member of the European Parliament lauding it is jaw-dropping. Mr Bloom owes an apology to the crew of the Warrior and to Fernando’s family. If he can’t bring himself to say sorry then UKIP’s new leader should apologise on his behalf. We can disagree about climate change without celebrating the killing of a man.

Godfrey Bloom is a vile man.

What a vile individual.

Sad to say however, I am unsurprised to hear this of a UKIP MEP.

You see, climate change supporters have to put up with the likes of Rajendra Pachauri being an arrogant idiot in front of the world’s media, while climate change skeptics have to put up with stupid idiots like this guy parading themselves on YouTube.

Neither camp is covering themselves in glory right now.

I’d like to thank Godfrey Bloom – a previous idiotic comment of his stopped one of my friends from voting UKIP, and hopefully this will stop a few more. Keep it up, Godfrey!

THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF PENGUINS!

THE SEAS AREN’T GOING TO BOIL!

Well I’m glad we got that cleared up; no more Greenpeace propaganda will I be imbibing.

On a matter a sheer pedantry, however: he doesn’t say Vive Le France, he says Vive La France. And rightly so, for “France” is feminine and so is prefixed by “la” not “le”.

So sort that out Sunny, my French pride demands it.

…funded by “ridiculous middle-class, middle-aged people spouting junk science”.

Is he paying for it then?

You see, climate change supporters have to put up with the likes of Rajendra Pachauri being an arrogant idiot

Yeah that’s a really good comparison LFAT. Nice straw-man there.

Be fair. At least it wasn’t his brother who did it.

But Sunny, there are two “camps” to this “debate”.

LFAT has to maintain the illusion that somehow both sides are relatively equal – that there is in fact a debate as oppose to scientific consensus versus a bunch of jumped-up nincompoops who think they, from the comfort of their armchairs with no specialist training at all, can call that consensus into doubt.

If LFAT doesn’t maintain the illusion of two equal sides, then there can be no “debate” and thus climate “scepticism” is revealed for what it is: head-in-sand denialism rooted in prejudice and the childish conclusion that the world cannot be a certain way because I don’t want it to be that way!

Hence straw men are essential, or else LFAT is going to have to accept that there is no debate, he’s just a moron very much on the wrong side of the fence.

Then again, this is the blogger who defended the police after they assaulted an innocent man from behind and in the process caused his death, and tried to claim that the innocent man was “provoking” the police…by walking away from them with his hands in his pockets.

There’s a word for people like LFAT, and it begins with the letter “c”.

“There’s a word for people like LFAT, and it begins with the letter “c”.”

Conservative?

You see, climate change supporters have to put up with the likes of Rajendra Pachauri being an arrogant idiot

LFAT, just bleedin say that some of your fellow Tories/UKippers is bang wrong on an issue without clinging onto whatabouttery. It’s possible. It can be done. You’ll find it can actually be quite liberating.

So this is the big scoop mentioned yesterday on Twitter Sunny? The video’s terrible.

LFAT @ 2

“while climate change skeptics have to put up with stupid idiots like this guy parading themselves on YouTube.”

Er, these halfwits are the only people you have. Without these people there is no ‘sceptics’.

Take away the elderly, piss soaked Tories and those too Right Wing for the Tories and the deniers have and and empty hall.

Vile man, vile ideas, deserves to be exposed for what he is and let the nasty bile sink him.

Come clean Daniel. That was you under that cap wasn’t it?

I can spot your spoof character acting a mile off………

You couldn’t make up someone that thick, anything I’d cook up would never be able to touch that ignorance.

Nobody in their right mind could defend justifications for the illegal sinking of the
Rainbow Warrior. It was breaking the law , state sanctioned terrorism, and act of war and piracy.
And if he was not aware that a murder had taken place in the process, then his ignorance is irresponsible to say the least.
And if my memory serves me well, one too many Frenchmen welcomed those murderers back home as heroes.Having made the understandable mistake perhaps of confusing the Rainbow Warrior—with Nelsons flag-ship,H.M.S Victory.

@16 – Someone from UKIP not doing their research? Surely not! I can’t for a moment believe that any UKIP representative would *ever* say anything based purely upon ideological prejudice designed to stir up the likeminded.

*ahem*

@Paul Sagar

“scientific consensus”

I have been informed that science does not work with consensus

Nobody scientist says a “consensus” proves beyond reasonable doubt that water freezes at (x) temperature.
It either does,or it doesn’t—regardless of consensus.

“Nobody scientist” should be ” No scientist” in my previous post.
Cringe!

20. Shatterface

I prefer ‘nobody scientist’: it conjours up an image of a throbbing brain in a bell-jar cackling to itself.

This man is the most high-profile political figure my secondary school has ever produced. It at least motivates me to do all I can to stop this being the case.

Any opinions on whether this would be covered under the 2006 Terrorism Act, which makes illegal a statement that “glorifies the commission or preparation (whether in the past, in the future or generally)” of acts of terrorism?

Depends on what headwear you have and whether you pray on a Friday.

24. Pamela Williamson

The French state terrorism of the 1980’s in sending secret service agents to sink by bombing the ‘Rainbow Warrior’ was a dark day for NZ-franco relations. Those relations have since been repaired to a major degree but the incident has never been forgotten in NZ as there has never been real remorse shown by the french people who continue to flaunt their bombers on TV talk shows etc.

I remind you that as a member of the British and EU Parliaments you also are sworn to uphold the rule of law – whatever the politics of the matter. Your point that Greenpeace is responsible for the sad reality (if true) of old people in the UK burning their books for fuel is sorely misguided as a justification for your insensitive and outrageous comments.

Neither New Zealand nor Mr Pereira’s family are responsible for old people burning books for fuel in the UK as you appear to imply. That is an internal political matter for the UK. Green policies in ascendance in the UK are no business of NZ given Great Britain is a democracy – you draw too long a bow!

Your admitted ignorance of that fact there was a death caused by the French government in the harbour dock of our largest city Auckland is a disingenuous excuse. It was in any event a terrorist act (by a supposedly friendly european power who exported their goods to us) against NZ and all New Zealanders inside their sovereign territory. It foreshadowed state sponsored terrorism all over the world leaving us where we are today.

I also note HM the Queen, Queen of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, is also the Queen of New Zealand and NZ is a Commonwealth country. One would expect better diplomacy from a British parliamentarian given the major export to New Zealand from the UK presently appears to be its citizens seeking a better life.

As an important aside, the bombed Greenpeace boat was docked in NZ as part of its campaign (supported NZ-wide) protesting against French nuclear testing in the South Pacific at Moruroa Atoll – nothing whatsoever to do with the energy crisis unless you wish to support french nuclear testing that harmed on an intergenerational basis thousands of vulnerable islanders of the South Pacific.

Finally, how dare you score cheap political points on the back of your hurtful ignorance! Shame on you. Apologise fulsomely please to all New Zealanders and Mr Pereira’s lovely family and with genuine contrition – and not merely en passant as you did this morning on Morning Report on Radio NZ National on the way to harangueing us about your country’s internal problems that have nothing to do with NZ.

25. J Alfred Prufrock

@24 Pamela Williamson:

Your criticisms are articulate and well-informed; alas they should be directed to Mr Bloom’s personal blog. Regards.

26. Pamela Williamson

Thanks J Alfred. Now reposted on his blog.

27. Pamela Williamson

I have had my post removed by Bloom’s UK, EU & Environment Blog. Was placed under a different blog heading as the “appropriate blog” on Greenpace (which includes his defiant new clip justifying his previous atrocious one on the sinking of the Greenpeace boat at Copenhagen) was blocked. It invites comment and has 10 comments listed but cannot be opened. Is Bloom adding censorship to his other problems?

Pamela Williamson,

Your post at 24 was clearly addressed at Bloom. Relax, you are amongst friends here.

Barney @ 22,

Well, if it isn’t, it should be. Though I suspect you and I both know that realpolitik will make that impossible…
