Help us raise money for an ad against Rod Liddle!

The massive interest in the campaign by Indy readers against Rod Liddle as editor of the Independent has raised serious doubts even with Alexander Lebedev.

I’ve been told by several top sources at the Independent that the once-certain appointment is now being considered with greater reservation than before. Hell, the Indy’s own staff are sending out coded messages – they don’t want him there. Lebedev is still considering Liddle, but with greater reservations than before.

We need your help to make Alexander Lebedev’s doubts bigger. We want to place an advert (below) in the Independent, making the case that it would suffer greatly under the editorship of Rod Liddle.

If the Indy refuses the ad, the money raised will go to three charities dealing with Somalian refugees, a women’s rape and sexual abuse support group and a charity campaiging on climate change.

This is the ad we’ve quickly put together, with some help from Beau Bo D’Or

I am asking you to donate whatever you can – £1 to £10 – to make this happen. We need to raise just £500 to place the ad. Even a contribution of £5 each could help us reach our goal by this week.

We don’t have many options other than this ad campaign because much of the media have refused to talk about or adequately question Rod Liddle about his views.

This is our chance to stand up against the British media and say we’re sick of them tolerating misogyny, racism and general idiocy. The Indy would suffer greatly if it were run by a troll who says bigoted things just to annoy people.

We are collaborating with the Facebook group, Left Foot Forward and 38 Degrees to raise money for the campaign.

Please give what you can.

Rod Liddle’s Greatest Hits

On women

“The vast majority of women with very small children are, by their own admissions, useless at their jobs.” – 2005

“I accept that there are such a thing as lesbians — perhaps eight or nine of them, living quietly in Hebden Bridge.” – 2008

“Britain’s women embrace the notion that an unconfined number of sexual partners is the desirable norm, preferably while pissed.” – 2008

“I accept that there are such a thing as lesbians — perhaps eight or nine of them, living quietly in Hebden Bridge.” – 2008

“Radical feminism … has left us with a country full of single mothers on benefit, the Child Support Agency, millions of divorcees and rich lawyers.” – 2008

“On average, fewer women wish to commit themselves totally to work than do men” – 2009

“So — Harriet Harman, then. Would you? I mean after a few beers obviously, not while you were sober.” – 2009

On global warming

“India is not experiencing global warming, apparently – indeed, its winters are getting slightly cooler by the year. The reason is that the country uses lots of fossil fuels and the resultant black carbon and sulphur smog prevents a whole bunch of sunlight reaching the ground. In other words the stuff that causes global warming can also, in a rather crude manner, prevent it.” – 2007

On Race

“The overwhelming majority of street crime, knife crime, gun crime, robbery and crimes of sexual violence in London is carried out by young men from the African-Caribbean community. Of course, in return, we have rap music, goat curry and a far more vibrant and diverse understanding of cultures which were once alien to us. For which, many thanks.” – 2009

“So, the Victorians, then. I asked them to name some famous Victorians – they were able to name two. Queen Victoria and Mary Seacole. There you have it: a racially balanced all women shortlist of Victorians. … What about the writers, Dickens, Carlyle, Ruskin? Or the politicians, Gladstone and Disraeli?… For the educationalists, Mary Seacole was one of the two most important figures of the century, solely and utterly because she was black.” – 2009

“Most middle-class parents would prefer not to spend £25,000 per child, per year, on private schooling. And they probably would not do so if the alternative was of a higher educational standard than the state school around the corner, the Mary Seacole City Academy for Advanced Textspeak and Stabbing. This is especially true in central London, where Dave lives.” – 2009

“Time for a quick update on what the Muslim savages are up to. Here’s a story from today’s Daily Mail, with a cut-out-keep picture, of Somali Muslim savages stoning to a twenty year old woman for the crime of adultery. … Incidentally, many Somalis have come to Britain as immigrants recently, where they are widely admired for their strong work ethic, respect for the law and keen, piercing, intelligence.” – 2009

————-

He has admitted to making jokes about not not being able to smoke at Auschwitz.

Numerous other messages were also posted on the Millwall site under the name ‘monkeymfc’ – which Rod Liddle has yet to explain (instead the site has now hidden most of those threads).

You can make a donation from here – it is secure and your details will only be saved for this campaign, no other.

Not sure about “You are” with a what appears to be a buzzard on it. Looks like you’re calling Lebedev a vulture.

I support the sentiment, though I’m not happy with the ad itself.

/dondraper

The vulture is Rod Liddle, and how he’ll kill the Indy. “you” refers to Indy readers, though it could also refer to Lebedev.

Hmm, I can sort of see that now but the general rule is that if it has to be explained, it’s not clear enough.

Maybe this is because it’s late, but I still don’t get it…

What does the “You are. Is he?” mean?

Better to give your money to Haiti.

tim f #4 – it’s a play on the original Indy tagline. It started with the tagline: ‘The Independent – we are. are you?

‘What does the “You are. Is he?” mean?’

I got the reference but I’m 43. I suspect it’ll actually only appeal to those who also remember ‘My goodness – my Guinness!’

Ah, ok. There’s no way I would’ve known that.

I’m not an Independent reader though & never have been, so the ad isn’t aimed at me. Perhaps Indie readers would be more likely to get the reference.

Donated – Hope enough is raised to have more than one. In fact I approve of the Donation-based social advertising. I hate the corporate shit – always, should I hate this? Or is it time to buy back the space within our world taken up by constant branding and propaganda?

I would’nt worry about the wording in the ad. It’s aimed at the owner rather than the readership, and the process of placing it is more important than the precise wording on this occasion.

I’ll lob a bob or two in (though less than I have for Haiti)

I have donated with pleasure. Hope they take the ad!

You should put an advert in Private Eye’s “Eye Need” small ads section…

and @12: wtf has that to do with anything? despite being utter balls, I mean. Stop trolling.

I found it very annoying that the payment page insists on getting my card details before sending me to Paypal. PayPal is useful to stop situations where you have to give card details to other sites of varying security.

Jesus, Sunny!

Since when did you become the arbiter deciding upon who is decent to have a job in the news media?

Why don’t you just cut to the chase and write to Lebedev and tell him he’s making a BIG mistake with Rod Liddle and should employ Mr Sunny Hundal instead?

Lebedev is probably thinking about giving the paper away for free for a few weeks to kick-start an increase in readership – so he’s hardly going to be bothered about a few hunded malcontents. He’s interested in making money – not making the existing staff happy – if they don’t like it they can try their pens elswhere and there will be new bums on the seats faster than you can spit out the word “Liddle”.

PS: Aristide’s point 5 (give the money to Haiti instead) would seem to be a bit more urgent at this moment. Well, I suppose that depends upon what you think is really important doesn’t it?

rumpypumpy,

Jesus!

You are under no obligation to join in. If I asked you to be good should I expect you to ask whether I was an arbiter of decency or not? Make up your own mind and stop moaning, FFS.

People got het up about the Christmas Number One, who should win X Factor and other stuff less substantial than this.

Go away and argue how the series before last of Strictly Come Dancing was the exact equivalent to Florida, why don’t you?

As for ‘telling someone’ what to think, you are being hugely disingenuous, he is asking for support to highlight the concerns of a number of people who believe the Independent would seize to be liberal or Independent if Liddle was the Editor. No-one is being forced, and it is a blog about his views, hence the appearance of his views on it, everyone else is entitled to leave other views, and the cycle continues, sometimes called debate.

“Lebedev is probably thinking about giving the paper away for free for a few weeks to kick-start an increase in readership – so he’s hardly going to be bothered about a few hunded malcontents. He’s interested in making money – not making the existing staff happy – if they don’t like it they can try their pens elswhere and there will be new bums on the seats faster than you can spit out the word “Liddle”.”

This quote does have some merit to the intentions of Lebedev, his primary interest is making money, and the furore over Liddle becoming editor has given him free publicity. Also, in the case of this article, a small amount of advertising revenue. We are free (£500) to post an advert, free to ask for support, free to question his choices. You are free to disagree. Its good this free-speech lark.

I don’t want Rod to become editor of my favourite paper.

Unfortunately I will not be donating. You use “climate change denier” as a reason for him not being an editor. The word “denier” in this sense is widely used to mean “somebody who questions the scientific authority” when historically the scientific authorities have often been wrong and stubborn.

I don’t know whether I agree with climate change believers or sceptics – they both submit compelling arguments and I have time for neither of them.

You’ve lost a chunk of your supporters I imagine. In the process gaining others. But a paper like the Independent shouldn’t simply wane to the will of authority on the matter of climate change.

“PS: Aristide’s point 5 (give the money to Haiti instead) would seem to be a bit more urgent at this moment. Well, I suppose that depends upon what you think is really important doesn’t it?”

More nonsense. I paid £2.50 for a coffee today, naughty me, as well as my train fare and sandwich for lunch (over£15), again, how will the world cope.

You really seem to struggle with this freedom thing, we are free to spend our money as we see fit. The Haiti donations, of course, are more important; but if someone has a cause, and asks for donations, and I agree with that cause, why on earth shouldn’t I?

Why do people here not understand that they are venting irritation at Rod Liddle merely as a proxy for their dislike that Lebedev will own the Independent?

It’s like going onto a football forum and listening to QPR fans moaning about the managers Paul Hart + Mick Harford instead of the owners Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone who are the people who have ruined the club.

Good luck with the ad and the campaign, even though I disagree. Say what you think and make a legitimate protest – that’s free speech and civil liberty. The downside of a campaign like yours is that it could discourage people even proposing someone like Liddle for such a post, and make people even more afraid than ever to speak their minds. Maybe you think Liddle should be afraid to speak his mind, given some of the things that he says. But I don’t think you can teach respect through fear. You may not like Rod Liddle – and he’s been generous in providing us with reasons not to – but the one thing I don’t think Liddle would be guilty of as an editor is craven (and covert) obedience to a boss. Clearly we can’t say that of editors in the Murdoch press. But what about the liberal press? At a time when people can be arrested for having a meeting to even discuss the idea of holding a legal protest, causing a bit of offence is the least of our worries. Our right to free speech is being eroded (see for example the recent Irish blasphemy laws) along with our right to freedom of assembly, protest and belief. And, I believe, our right to be offensive.

21. Trofim Lysenko

Wow. Just wow.

The driving force (supposedly) behind Asians in Media – the editor of a magazine that is credible (supposedly), respected (supposedly), widely read (supposedly), and frequently sets the agenda (supposedly) – is so unable to find, earn or borrow £500 that he’s reduced to begging for money. On the Internet.

Has The Guardian switched to performance-related pay for its columnists? Has The Independent stopped even reading your submissions? Has The Financial Times slammed its door in your face as well?

Never mind, Sonny. I’ll donate 50p for your little hobby, if you dance for me.

22. The Grim Reaper

Would you like to be editor of The Independent yourself, Sunny?

Just think you should declare it if you do…

@21 & @22

The point is that lots of people don’t want Liddle as the Indie ed. If Sunny put up the £500 himself then it would be a personal vendetta as rumpypumpy keeps trying to make out, rather than a mass or liberal-minded folks who don’t want a racist misogynist twunt as editor of what once was a decent paper.

Christ, let him go and edit the Sexpress or Hate Mail or something more in line with his “all blacks are stupid/women shouldn’t work” way of thinking.

“I saw elsewhere that you considered Charles Murray had been debunked? I can assure you that is not the case. In fact, as recently noted in the Economist, differences can be expected:”

I assume this post will be removed soon? Charles Murray – An individual I love to argue against – a modern day intellectual master race justifier. But on this thread? I can just about make out Liddle – Racist, Charles Murray – Racist, community racists defending themselves, but seriously. Delete this post also… .***

You clearly are unfamiliar with Murray’s work or are maliciously misrepresenting him on purpose. Either way, it is pretty disapointing. Murray has simply observed that intelligence is predictive of a number of socio-economic outcomes. That is well established. I’d recommend the research by Professor Ian Deary or Linda Gottfredson for recent papers on this in the context of health in particular.
