At a guess, given the context, a likely scenario is that she personally guaranteed her husband’s borrowing. Certainly any borrowing secured on the family home would require her signature. In fact there’s often very little incentive for a creditor to bankrupt someone. It rarely gets you paid. I expect the creditor will be hoping she wins as it would give him some serious leverage.

That is my point about this story. A CCJ for that kind of sum is normally only seen against limited companies where the debt is business related. It is difficult for an individual to have such a debt. Also, in such a situation, the creditor would have little or no disincentive to making her bankrupt.

Yes, the bankruptcy issue only comes into play if the debt is called in and bankruptcy proceedings are initiated but there is an open question here as to whether Shafi disclosed her financial situation to her local CA when seeking the nomination.

A CCJ for £325,00 against an individual is pretty unusual- just ask yourself who would lend you that kind of money without solid security.
