#kerryout Tory PPC’s £325,000 CCJ
What’s the worst thing that could possibly happen to the idiotic #kerryout campaign?
How about this story from today’s Daily Mirror…
Tory star Adeela Shafi has £325,000 CCJ ‘debt’
A key member of David Cameron’s new generation of women MPs has had three county court judgments against her since 2007 – including one for almost £325,000.
And her husband Ijaz Shafi was declared bankrupt in 2000.
Muslim lecturer Adeela Shafi was hand-picked by Cameron to open for him at the 2008 Tory Conference.
He then endorsed her as a Parliamentary candidate and campaigned in her Bristol East constituency along with his shadow cabinet team.
CCJs of £400 and £1,048 have been settled but £324,272 is outstanding – despite her being ordered to repay it nearly three years ago in July 2007 – five months before she became a prospective Tory MP.
Hat Tip – Political Scrapbook
As Political Scrapbook correctly notes, an undischarged bankrupt cannot stand for election to Westminster, and an MP who goes bankrupt while at Westminster is out of a job, a fate that Jeffrey Archer narrowly avoided in 1974 by standing down at the October election before the shit really hit the fan.
Strangely enough, this seems to have been a minor detail that self-styled campaigner for political transparency Harry Cole/Tory Bear neglected to mention when setting up the #kerryout campaign to raise money for Shafi’s election campaign in Bristol East.
Still, we shouldn’t be too hard on young Harry.
Mistakes like this are bound to happen when you’re the unfortunate outcome of a failed cloning experiment involving Susan Boyle and Archie the Inventor, as demonstrated by his weekly appearances on ‘Guy TV News’.
FFS, Guido, can’t you do everyone a favour and put Harry in a burqa…
…every week.
UPDATE
A quick check has revealed that, to date, the #kerryout campaign has raised the princely sum of £1,681 for Shafi’s campaign.
Using the same fundraising system, Boris Johnson’s brother, Jo, has raised £11,956.

Hi Unity
I think there’s a lot more needed here to make this work..
A CCJ for £325,00 against an individual is pretty unusual- just ask yourself who would lend you that kind of money without solid security.
Who did she owe the money to?
How did it come about?
It is a good story if it stands up but I’m concerned about the lack of information.
BTW I agree with you about the idiocy of the kerryout campaign.
Like many of the parachuted Nu Lab women, she has clearly found a position way beyond her capabilities (delivering pizzas?) but at least she engages with people and is by no means the worst in that nest of vipers.
Pagar:
Yes, the bankruptcy issue only comes into play if the debt is called in and bankruptcy proceedings are initiated but there is an open question here as to whether Shafi disclosed her financial situation to her local CA when seeking the nomination.
How long has the KerryOut campaign been going?
1 month or thereabouts?
And it’s raised £1,681
She owes £325,000 (allegedly officer
).
So at the current rate of fun(d)raising that would take 193 months to pay off.
Or just over 16 years.
I’d say she’s a dead cert for a place in the Rees-Mogg administration of 2035.
Lot’s to look forward too.
Anyone like to take a guess at how many houses you’d need to flip to cover £325,000?
“a fate that Jeffrey Archer narrowly avoided in 1974 by standing down at the October election before the shit really hit the fan.”
Well, sorta but no. For Archer didn’t go bankrupt. He wrote “Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less” which bailed him out.
Sadly……
Anyone like to take a guess at how many houses you’d need to flip to cover £325,000?
That is my point about this story. A CCJ for that kind of sum is normally only seen against limited companies where the debt is business related. It is difficult for an individual to have such a debt. Also, in such a situation, the creditor would have little or no disincentive to making her bankrupt.
The story doesn’t smell right- are you sure it is not a set up?
Has anybody paid the £8 to check the details?
EPIC DALE
Pagar,
At a guess, given the context, a likely scenario is that she personally guaranteed her husband’s borrowing. Certainly any borrowing secured on the family home would require her signature. In fact there’s often very little incentive for a creditor to bankrupt someone. It rarely gets you paid. I expect the creditor will be hoping she wins as it would give him some serious leverage.
So what does Harry Cole / Tory Bear got to say for himself? The Tories needed a token brown, they didn’t care whether she was legit or not?

Oh dear, has Baroness Warsi got competition for top Tory box ticker?

Poor David Willetts only got 1 go to Warsi’s 9 in the last 3 years. That’ll learn ‘im to f*** with grammar schools.
I expect the creditor will be hoping she wins as it would give him some serious leverage.
In that scenario, I’d have thought that a charge on the house was leverage enough.
I’m certainly as happy as everyone else to gloat about the failure of the absurd kerryout, but did there have to be the comment about Tory Bear’s appearance? That seems clearly beyond the bounds of fair comment to me. And after all, one of the main charges against kerryout from the left was that it was conducted in such a way as to resemble bullying…
Oww, don’t be too harsh on poor Harry – he may be an ugly bugger, but he’s always a good villain, and has provided us with years of entertainment! You know his blog about student politics at Edinburgh got taken down after the police got involved? Fun fun.
