Watch: footage from EDL riots in Stoke

Seventeen people were arrested at an English Defence League (EDL) rally in Stoke-on-Trent yesterday after trouble broke out between the EDL and the police.

The video above, brought to our attention by Watching With George blog, also features a policeman being attacked by EDL supporters.

Video above via ‘A Very Public Sociologist‘ blog – who has a full account of what happened.

According to Tony and Mike of local Stoke blog, Pits n Pots, the EDL’s mood turned ugly very quickly. Several attempts by the EDL were made to break through police lines – presumably to reach the anti-fascist mobilisation around the corner. The irony of an avalanche of missiles pouring onto police lines while an EDL banner bearing the legend ‘marching peacefully against extremist Islam’ fluttered in the background was not lost on bemused locals.

Meanwhile, the BBC reported:

Four officers were injured and vehicles were damaged when EDL supporters broke through police cordons. Two of the officers needed hospital treatment.

About 1,500 EDL supporters were at the rally in Hanley on Saturday to protest about Islamic extremism, police said.

I thought British Muslims for Secular Democracy (BMSD or BDSM) would be mobilising against the EDL? Or do they only mobilise against Muslims?

@John Booth

Is that the beginnings of a Whatabout?

Would love to see the “UAF are the real fascists” brigade try to spin this one.

blah blah white working class blah blah blah legitimate concerns about blah blah blah.

Sing along, you all know the words.

Tunbridge Wells has it down pat, I await to see if anyone sings the chorus here…

”Would love to see the “UAF are the real fascists” brigade try to spin this one.

One possible spin might be that the trouble starts when the police greet the EDL (hooligans that they are) with riot gear, dogs and kettling tactics.

1,500! They are getting bigger. People are going to sit-up and notice when there are 5,000. Plus, violence works.

Well, if there were 5000 violent thugs they probably would sit up and take notice, yes. They’d think, “what a dreadful band of violent thugs“.

Robin,

“Would love to see the “UAF are the real fascists” brigade try to spin this one.”

Well, since UAF were not there I think that could be a challenge for them (although no doubt some will try it). Anyway, can’t EDL and UAF both be fascists – along with some Islamicist groups? None of them seem to behave in a democratic, peaceful manner (which is where John Booth’s friends (?) British Muslims for Secular Democracy score highly).

My enemy’s enemy is my friend is bad thinking, if your new friend happens to be equally unpleasant, just waving a better-looking banner.

UAF are not the EDL by a long stretch, what is it with you?

blah blah minority rights blah blah blah legitimate concerns about racism blah blah blah islamophobia blah blah blah homophobia blah blah blah

Luckily I know this one Lionel, a charming bunch of fellow’s wearing wooly niqab’s taught me it in Birmingham not that long ago, all together now -

“We hate all brown people,
Apart from slightly mad Sikhs,
We hate usurious Jews,
But H-Y-S oh we love you.”
