Boris fights with Osborne over bankers’ bonuses
Boris Johnson picked a fight with Shadow Chancellor George Osborne yesterday in signalling to the Conservatives that he wanted the tax on bankers bonuses scrapped if they got into power.
The tax is only meant to last for a year but according to the Daily Mail it could be worth up to £5 billion to Britain’s treasury.
Bankers pay packages are also under assault with the new 50% income tax rate on earnings over £150,000. Boris opposes the 50% tax too.
He claims the tax will encourage bankers to leave London but there is no actual evidence of large-scale movement.
A comment on the Daily Mail website summed it up:
I wish Boris would fight as hard for the rest of us as he does for the bankers.
None of the top-rated comments on the Daily Mail website were sympathetic to the bankers.

So, wait, we should be determining policy on the strength of the ill-informed prejudices of Daily Mail readers now? Something of a change of direction for LibCon isn’t it?
Several papers reported last week that demand for office space is booming in the City, with rents jumping 10.5% this year alone. So the Mayor’s claim that we are about to experience a banker exodus rings hollow.
Does he have so little confidence in London that he thinks we need to turn out our pockets to attract this business?
If he wants to defend London’s interests, why not lobby the Government to regulate the city so it works in our interests? He should do more to champion financial innovations like investing in London’s businesses, using the LDA and his personal contacts to develop ways to provide credit to SMEs and lobby for new instruments to direct funds towards social and low-carbon enterprises.Better that than spread scare stories to defend those whose recent innovations brought about the recession.
Good grief Tonga Tim, that is a desperate and tedious attempt to point out some form of hypocrisy but with no actual comment on the post itself.
Any goon can see that Sunny isn’t praising the Daily Mail commentators to the high heavens, or that policy should be based on them but rather, considering the Daily Fail is a hot bed of Tory voters; perhaps the idea of pulling the tax cut isn’t popular with them.
But then again you know that, you’re just trying to be clever…
Sorry about that DHG, but there’s no real content to the main piece either is there? Boris is opposed to the bonus tax, but the policy is that it’s a one-off anyway. As in “The tax is only meant to last for a year”. Which means that there is no conflict at all between Boris “Scrap this tax” Johnson and George “This is a one-off tax that will not be continued” Osborne.
It’s a non-story, in so far as it talks about the bonus tax. The interesting bit is the 50p rate bit, but that’s been a public disagreement between Boris and the Tories ever since it was first suggested. And basing your views or opinions on anything said by comments left under newspaper stories is pointless and ridiculous. When it’s the Daily Mail that’s even more apparent.
Agreed, the content is slim, there can be no dispute there and the trolling of SMFS in other threads has put my back up somewhat but I still think that what I put out there as reasons for Sunny sharing this brief piece still stand.
Of course it is not going to be to your taste but that doesn’t mean it is worthless.
Fair enough. You pays your money and you makes your choice…

No, just pointing out that even the Boris-loving ill-informed idiots on the Daily Mail website don’t have sympathy for the bankers.
Indeed.
You are right to ask why are politicians, in contrast to the US, are so pathetic.
Did you see the Hester “grilling” yesterday…embarrassing.
