Indy keeps batting for Tories with Eton intvw

by Sunny Hundal

The Independent continued its tacit support for the Conservatives yesterday in an interview with the headmaster at Eton School.

The deeply sympathetic interview by deputy political editor Nigel Morris said it was a: ‘Warning for Labour over attacks on public school background of Tory leader’.

The interview helpfully highlighted the apparent effort Eton makes in attracting students from a range of backgrounds.

Tony Little, who has been head of the £9,617-a-term school for seven years has criticised politicians who have used its name to score points.

Mr Cameron, in turn, has been trying to play down his schooling in an attempt to boost his credibility with the general public and avoid being dismissed as an out-of-touch toff.

Mr Little said “one might have hoped” such tactics had been left behind in the last century, but added that he and the school tried to rise above them.

I take it that you don’t read Mr Rintouls’ thinly veiled Labour Party Propaganda pieces at the Inde then?

New glasses please. lol

You think Rentoul’s thinly veiled? I heavily dislike the Indy these days, but you can’t accuse Rentoul of not putting his cards on the table.

Charity status.

‘Nuff said.

Bear in mind that Anthony Little came from an immensely underprivileged background, and attended Eton himself thanks to a scholarship – as did Boris Johnson. His was a music scholarship, whereas Johnson’s was an academic one. Little is one of the finest advertisements for the public school system, and also for a truly meritocratic and ‘fair’ society. He’s a wise, sensitive and sensible man. I’ve met him only once, and wish it were more.

silent hunter wouldn’t you be happier posting on a tory forum?

Apart from the outrageous fees at Eton at £9,617 a term and the anti-competitive practices investigated by the OFT, I can’t understand why there is all this fuss about Eton.

Dozens of maintained schools achieve better average A-level results with their candiates, including no less than three in the London borough where I live:

And I keep thinking of that research study at Warwick Uni:

“The UK’s most expensive private schools are producing pupils who achieve the worst grades at university, according to research. An eight-year study of graduates’ results by researchers at the University of Warwick suggests that the more parents pay in school fees, the less chance their children have of getting a good degree.”

don’t read Mr Rintouls’ thinly veiled Labour Party Propaganda

The guy clearly hates Brown because he chucked out Blair.

I’m becoming increasingly apprehensive about the mental stability of Blairites as more testimony unfolds in the Chilcot inquiry about the scale of deceit in the lead up to the Iraq war, the administrative failings in the execution and in planning for the aftermath of the conflict.

I wonder what did happen to the missing $8 billions dollars:

“WASHINGTON – At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon.

“The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority’s own inspector general blasts the CPA for ‘not providing adequate stewardship’ of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries.

“The audit was first reported on a Web site earlier this month by David Hackworth, a journalist and retired colonel. A U.S. official confirmed that the contents of the leaked audit cited by Hackworth were accurate. . .

“One of the main benefactors of the Iraq funds was the Texas-based firm Halliburton, which was paid more than $1 billion out of those funds to bring in fuel for Iraqi civilians.

“The monitoring board said despite repeated requests it had not been given access to U.S. audits of contracts held by Halliburton, which was once run by Vice President Dick Cheney, and other firms that used the development funds.”

$8.8 billion is an awful lot of money to go missing.

“Bear in mind that Anthony Little came from an immensely underprivileged background”

Are you sure about that? It seems his primary education was at Eton Choir School. You might be right, but where’s your evidence?

” as did Boris Johnson”

Boris Johnson was the son of privately educated, Oxford attendee Stanley Johnson. He himself attended a private primary school prior to getting some financial support to attend Eton – though as King’s scholarships are means-tested I suspect this was minimal due to his wealthy background.

This is no story of Eton helping Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson escape the ghetto.

Indeed, I wonder whether there are more than a handful of working-class boys enabled to go to Eton on scholarships- it seems the Upper
Middle Class monopolises them.

Found some more stats to back up m previous
point:

* 1,300 boys attend Eton http://www.etoncollege.com/registration.aspx
* 130 boys (10%) attend Eton on scholarships.
* 100 (7.7%) of these receive some fee reduction (limited e.g 10% for a King’s Scholar)
* 40 (3.1%) receive some means-tested financial support (i.e they are middle or working class and can’t afford the £29,000 per year fee)
* Only 20 (1.5%) are educated free of charge

Why are you surprised about the Indy stance ?
Roger “I hate state schools and the NHS” Alton f*****d up the observer by bringing in right wing clowns such as Cohen, Bright, Browne, and Porter.
Now he has fucked up the Indy with his “I wish Mrs T but Dave will do, was in charge of the country”.philosophy.”
The man is a d**
No wonder the readership of the Indy has declined since he has took over.
Also Servy boy you want to be careful. A right winger like yourself collecting data on public schoolboys, people will talk.
Surely you have got more to do in your sad empty life.
