Mandelson’s Copyright Death Star exposed

by Unity

I’m not even going to comment on this story, having more or less promised myself from the outset that I wouldn’t go into full-on swearblogging mode at LC. Instead, I’ll the Guardian tell the story

Lord Mandelson is seeking to amend the laws on copyright to give the government sweeping new powers against people accused of illegal downloading…

In a letter to Harriet Harman, the leader of the house and head of the committee responsible for determining changes to such legislation, Mandelson says he is “writing to seek your urgent agreement” to changes to the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act “for the purposes of facilitating prevention or reduction of online copyright infringement”…

Henry VIII clause alert!!!

The proposed alteration to the Copyright Act would create a new offence of downloading material that infringes copyright laws, as well as giving new powers or rights to “protect” rights holders such as record companies and movie studios – and, controversially, conferring powers on “any person as may be specified” to help cut down online infringement of copyright.

The changes proposed seem small – but are enormously wideranging, given both the breadth of even minor copyright infringement online, where photographs and text are copied with little regard to ownership, and the complexity of ownership.

And, in the process, leave the Copyright Act wide open to further amendments with minimal parliamentary scrutiny – cue Rupert Murdoch…

By giving the business secretary the power to amend the Copyright Act at will, Labour fears Mandelson could be creating a Trojan horse that under a Tory administration would allow Murdoch to be rewarded for his support for David Cameron over Gordon Brown, for example by making it illegal to use such extracts from a news site for profit.

I know I said wouldn’t swearblog, but isn’t Mandelson a complete and utter cunt.

conferring powers on “any person as may be specified”

By whom? When? How? What powers? This looks like either a staggeringly poorly thought out, or an astonishingly wide-ranging amendment. And yes, the man is a towering shit. The tragedy is that he’s the most competent and effective shit in the entire Government.

Why did anyone ever think this was a good man with great ideas? Ever?

Bugger.

“would allow Murdoch to be rewarded for his support for David Cameron over Gordon Brown, for example by making it illegal to use such extracts from a news site for profit.”

Bang goes my plan to cut and paste the entire New International output (having paid for a subscription of course) onto a blog and then collect the advertising revenue.

If you don’t like this misguided and illiberal proposal I suggest you join Tom Watson‘s facebook group against it.

Unity,
No, Mandelson isn’t a “complete and utter c*nt”. Please find a term of abuse that doesn’t insult nearly all women by comparing us to that morally bankrupt shithead.

I know I said wouldn’t swearblog, but isn’t Mandelson a complete and utter cunt.

And then some.

Please find a term of abuse that doesn’t insult nearly all women

That’s a matter of debate, I’ve known some committed feminist activists who’ve used the word and think it holds no power in the terms you describe. Others have agreed with you.

I wish Mandy would come up with something as useful as a Death Star but sadly not…

It is a tad surprising that the word ‘cunt’ is used as a term of abuse by men. For we get pleasure out of it. I really fail to see why it is used as a term of abuse. What is that all about?

@8 Douglas: It is a tad surprising that the word ‘cunt’ is used as a term of abuse by men. For we get pleasure out of it. I really fail to see why it is used as a term of abuse. What is that all about?

There’s no rhyme or reason to it. For example, if something is bollocks, it’s rubbish, but if someone has a lot of balls, that’s a compliment. Same literal meaning, different connotation.

Please don’t throw Mandy out; even though it is natural to do it when you are shifting the manure pile. Some of us can’t stand conspiracy theorists, but enjoy a good conspiracy. Mandy does real conspiracy, and exceptionally competently.
Now three parts of what he has been up to recently were easing D. Milliband into the EU High Rep chair (failed), getting this little horror onto the Statute book (work in progress) and enabling Life Peers to resign (also w.i.p.). The challenge is to figure out what is Mandy’s Plan A objective and his Plan B fall back (bearing in mind that Mandy may all along intend to use plan A solely as a means of getting Plan B.) So what else is Mandy up to that fills in the intriguing blanks in all this?

Much more fun than sudoku.

There must be some cross party support for opposing this attempt to put draconian control laws on how people utilise the internet, it seems the leaderships of both parties are clamouring to gain the support of the media moguls while everyone else is aghast at this…. IMO it’s time for a group of MPs from Labour, Conservatives and the Lib Dems to push for a net neutrality and fairness law that makes sure that any action against alleged file sharers is subject to scrutiny in a court of law. That the internet remains free, and to stop the attempt to scrutinise everyone use of the internet and record what they do.

Also Mandelson is a cunt.

Why doesn’t he just bugger off back to Builderberg or Bohemian Grove. All the songs these days are covers and most of the movies are re-makes of original ideas. The greatest innovation in communications in a generation and he wants to shut it down to preserve the interests of a wealthy few who got wealthy by denying mass access to information, ripping off artists and charging a $20 for a dvd that costs $.05 to produce. Oh and if you are so concerned about the environment Mandelson, then have you considered the polluting effects of all those soon to be obsolete cds, dvds etc. Not to mention the energy wasted on transport, packaging etc. This is not about copyright, it is about big government and establishment companies trying to limit freedom and control information. Goto infowars.com or eff.org.

ps. Why doesn’t he go further and lock-up anybody who ever recorded a song off the radio! Rather than the c-word, I think ‘fraudulent and cancerous polyp on the anus of humanity’ would be better (Red Dwarf)
