Twitter related changes on libcon
Twitter is an important conversation tool for us for various reasons.
Firsly because an increasing amount of politics related chatter, linking and discussion takes place there.
Secondly, in terms of direct traffic from specific webites Twitter is now our biggest source of readers.
So I’m experimenting with how to have tighter integration between the two.
I’ve added one plugin by Topsy.com that now automatically inserts Tweets about a blog post on to that post as a comment. That way people can see what people on Twitter have said about it.
I’ve also got rid of the tweetmeme button because I found it too clunky, and because it only shows how many people had re-tweeted it (there are other websites that show that now)
I’ve replaced that with a javascript based plugin that tells you how many people have clicked the Twitter link to land on that page from Twitter. It also allows you to ‘retweet’ the post as before.
I’m still experimenting with all this so let me know your thoughts. If you don’t use Twitter that’s fine too.
I’m still on the hunt for a good and functional tool to integrate with Facebook (our current plugin doesn’t work at times).
I’m also on the hunt for a light-weight plugin that just Tweets when a new blog post is published. Twitter Tools is a bit heavyweight and I don’t use most of its functionality. If you know either please let me know.

OK, sounds good, one of the reasons my blog is not back on line yet is my tackling of how to better use twitter in the mix.
Couple of things…
“21 ? Retweet”
The ? above in the retweet button is probably meant to be something else?
Also writing some PHP to post to twitter through the twitter API (and using the bit.ly API to shorten your URL at the same time) is quite quick and simple if you have access enough with where to place it.
To second #2, twitterfeed seems popular.
I was going to mention Twitterfeed as well. Use it for my blog and comic.
Will this mean a lot more ‘comments’ to wade through? If every time the article is tweeted?
thanks, will have a look at twitterfeed.
DHG – yup.
Lee, is the ? still coming up for you? Doesn’t for me…
I have access to the PHP, but don’t really know how to write the code to do that using the Twitter api…
Sunny,
Is this just a temporary thing, or will, one day, all threads look like this?
Yeah, its a bit tweet heavy here in teh comments. It might drive a bit more traffic here, but its going to murder useful debates…
Yep, I’d like to second that and the tweets don’t appear as notifications in my email, which I suppose is a blessing but it kinda messes around with the debate side of things.
I’ve used a wordpress plugin before that separates the trackbacks and blog comments into two sections of the comment thread. Might this kind of thing work well here? The Tweets are coming in as trackbacks, and they and the blog trackbacks will have less in common with the ongoing blog comment discussion. Grouping them up together might help get the best of both worlds ? (reflecting the debate going on on Twitter but not splitting the train of thought on the blog comment discussion)
Now that sounds good.
good point, though what if someone comments on a blog post in Twitter? It won’t come up properly.
I’ll see how I can group trackbacks, probably requires some fiddling with the PHP back-end which might not take long.
It’s not that bad though – come on now! Articles like Dave Osler’s are still getting a debate. This is just a tweet heavy page…
Yes, the “?” is still there, can’t see in the code what it is meant to be before unfortunately. Also check your email.
Sunny, WordPress offers the ‘publcise’ widget that automatically tweets every new blog post you post… whether you’re signed in or not.
I like the way tweetmeme shows various conversations and comments on twitter without taking up too much thread real estate. Seems a bit tweet heavy here now without adding much insight – comments 1-7 are just retweets, which I find make up the majority of twitter links.
Twitterfeed is rock solid – been using it for a long time, maybe 12 months.
The only downside is a slight delay as it uses your RSS feed.
“Twitter is an important conversation tool for us for various reasons” .. because we can’t hold our attention for longer than 140 characters
Could we get the tweets to appear below the comments? I can just about hold attention for 140 characters, but scrolling down six inches is just asking too much…
