I have no time for the BNP, but the left should not fall for a classic Tory trick here. The army is is full of tory toadies who have been attacking the govt for their own political reasons. This is a spat between tory generals and the BNP. They are as bad as each other.

The left shouldn’t rally around corrupt Tory generals and Labour politicians with blood on their hands just to try and counter the BNP. I’m not saying we blindly follow them, in fact quite the opposite – we must stand our ground and not let them claim the mantle of being a voice of opposition against the war.

As to use of Spitfires etc. these are part of a common cultural heritage that anyone can refer to. I don’t interpret them in the same way as the BNP do but I wouldn’t say they don’t have the right to represent them as they choose. Some of the ways our establishment use such images rankles with me too. All cutural areas can be contested. That’s nothing new.

But it does highlight a point many sensible people have been making. Let the Griffins have their platform, get them out of their comfort zone by asking them about stuff they’re not used to dealing with (like political generals) and watch them flounder.
