Ad campaign: ‘Labour old news in Brighton’
The Greens have unveiled an ad campaign aimed at the Labour Party’s annual conference in Brighton.
The area is one of the Green Party’s strongest areas in the country.
The ads will state: “Labour is old news in Brighton” – illustrating a tired-looking Gordon Brown made out of newsprint. Other versions of the ad show Jack Straw and Peter Mandelson.

The advert points out that twice as many people in Brighton (31%) voted Green in the recent European elections as voted Labour (15%) – and that the Conservatives also finished far behind the Greens, on 22%.
The Greens’ campaign director for Brighton Pavilion, Paul Steedman, said there were “going all out to win”.
Caroline Lucas, candidate for Brighton Pavilion, said:
I will be putting forward rigorous policies for more jobs, and better pay for nurses, cleaners and shopworkers, not just City slickers; for an NHS that doesn’t leave people in Brighton – or anywhere else – without healthcare because they can’t afford prescription charges or dental fees; for a rail network that works – and that people can actually afford to use.
I will stand up for all of Brighton’s communities, and we’re going to show that politics can be about a fair deal for everyone.
The ads will be displayed on 14 massive billboards in Brighton.

The most depressing bit is that there are thousands of tribal Labour supporters out there who still question “whether the Greens are really left wing”.
And it’s the same Labour supporters who, since 1994 at least, have been putting up with tons of nonsense from their leadership and still kept voting tribally nonetheless because the ballot paper had the word “Labour” printed on it.
That’s a brilliant piece of campaigning!
Let’s hope the “stupidly tribal” Labour voters finally realise who has been kicking them in the gonads all these years and vote for the Anyone But Labour Party.
That’s an abysmal piece of campaigning.
Firstly the likeness is appalling – for a moment I was confused by the late Tony Hancock’s apparent involvement in Brighton Pavilion.
Secondly it flies in the face of the local Green Party’s protestations of poverty – they’re poor and yet they can afford to blow £20K+ on billboards?
And thirdly, the statement is inaccurate. Labour is not finished in Brighton. We have a committed, local, left wing candidate in Nancy Platts who this Labour supporter amongst many others will be very happy to vote for.
Richard,
You’re entitled to vote for Nancy, of course, but will she really make any difference given the shackles the Labour party leadership put on any MP who is remotely ‘left wing’?
But moreover, it’s a bit mean to call this abysmal campaigning. I agree with Silent Hunter that these are some of the best political ads I’ve seen for ages. Possibly ever!
