The BBC anoints David Cameron
James Macintyre writes on his New Statesman blog:
Final proof that my colleague Mehdi is right to deny that the BBC is “left wing” (and that instead, as I have been saying, groupthink has made it fall in love with the Conservative Party) came with Tuesday night’s News at Ten, which was billed as an explainer of the “battle lines” at the next general election.
Both David Cameron and Alistair Darling gave key speeches today about public spending. The Tory leader focused on the issue of curbing subsidised food in Parliament — a genuine disgrace but one that he bizarrely blamed on “Labour”.
The Chancellor outlined the Government’s approach to public spending in future years. Arguably more important. But for some reason, the flagship bulletin decided to lead with the Cameron charm offensive — which admittedly included allowing the political editor, Nick Robinson, to film Cameron putting away a box of cereal at the start of the day — instead.

Ex Chairman of the Young Conservatives giving favourable coverage to David Cameron. I’m shocked!
I’m still trying to work out whether Andrew Neil was hired to be a BBC presenter or a right wing pundit.
Yes I was bemused by Cameron saying expenses had rocketed under Labour as though the expenses and freebis were brought in by Labour. If only we could get hold of what MPs were getting in expenses in the 1980s and 90s. The only thing is Labour is allowing Cameron to get away with this deceit.
@Steve
Did Nick Robinson question him on this claim? Or did he raise any questions about Cameron’s own expenses?
You’d think Cameron and his party were forced by Labour to flip their mortgages & claim for duck houses etc. Sounds like typical Cameronesque sleight of hand and you’re right, Labour are letting them get away with it.
Andy yes I agree. I guess a reason why Nick won’t question Cameron sceptically is because the BBC does not want to be seen as to embarrass Cameron otherwise they will be slammed for left leaning tendencies and the station will feel the full wrathe from the so called Progressive Conservatives.
I have often seen Cameron on the TV when he has been asked awkward questions and he has often become angry because he is flustered.
The BBC gave Blair an easy ride for years – because he was unassailable.
Now that Cameron appears unassailable, he will get the same treatment.
Otherwise he might actually cut those top BBC salaries, and we can’t have that happening, can we?
It’s not political.
David Cameron is the man to end this ‘two dip depression’ and the man to make Britain Great once again. His like hound looks good for a hunt as well. After the Great Lady Thatcher, Cameron will clear up this financial mess!!!! Up the Tories!!!!
The Tory party have been getting away with it at the BBC for years.
Newsnight has been given over to one long love in with the Tory party. Paxman is so biased with the the Tory party these days. As for Robinson,, he seems to want to have call me Dave’s babies.
Robisnson is a joke as a so called political journalist.
