Cameron forced to slam Dan Hannan again
Tory leader David Cameron was today forced to issue an even stronger rebuttal of MEP Daniel Hannan despite yesterday’s statement.
On Sky News Adam Boulton asks why Cameron boots out certain MPs for not toeing the party line but says nothing about Hannan:
But he remains a Conservative member of the European parliament – a prominent member of the awkward squad eager to embarrass Cameron’s hopes of rebranding his party.
When he was re-elected MEP Hannan and his fellow electee, Nigel Farage of UKIP, used most of their victory speeches to praise one another.
Can or should Cameron kick Hannan out? After all he booted out Edward Macmillan Scott MEP for not toeing the party line.

You guys are really sad if all you can do is put up “sailor” Prescott against Dan Hannen. Prescott would get a look in with a debate involving Hannen. You guys know how to get your ambitions and abilities confused. Get real and have a debate about the health of the nation. Watch all the lefties back pedal!!
Doesn’t matter if he’s booted out.
The damage is done and he’s lined up his job as a lucratively paid right wing U.S. TV commentator on Europe.
Blaney must be green with envy.
We each have to put our own 2 senses in, but only the truth shall prevail…well, I hope so-anyway!!???
No doubt we can expect the BBC and other MSM outlets to be consistent and to take Gordon Brown and the Labour leadership to task anytime any backbencher or other Labour non-entity speaks out and expresses views contrary to the party line? We can surely expect the BBC to use any example of some nutter like Dennis Skinner speaking out with awkward, unofficial, personal views much as they’ve invented this controversy over Hannan expressing his long-term views on the NHS? Yeah, sure.
@Costello: “That was liquid whattaboutery!”
@Costello: “That was liquid whattaboutery!”
Seeing as the BBC is supposed to be unbiased he does have a point.
What I find odd is that Hannan made these comments months ago but the BBC didn’t pick up on it then.
Welcome to the 21st century, Richard.
@2 Beau: “The damage is done and he’s lined up his job as a lucratively paid right wing U.S. TV commentator on Europe.”
Over here, Hannan is recognised as a clown, even by moderate Conservatives. But I can’t disagree that, even if sacked, Hannan has a commentator career ahead of him across the Atlantic. He’s a clown but he is a smart one who knows where the money is.
We’re going to have a few interesting months ahead. Owing to the expenses exposure, loads of MPs know that they need a new career and nutty media pundit is an obvious option. Alan Duncan is on yet another yellow card, and only requires a pint of beer or glass of wine before he performs as an idiot on the next covert video. Just imagine how he might appear on television (for dosh) next to a bubbly Hazel Blears, in the manner of Portillo and Abbott. Apologies to anyone who is eating their tea when reading this comment.
Nutty media pundit is a great career (cf Frank Field). The Today programme phones you up, you talk bonkers to the journalist for five minutes to elevate your weirdness, and they send you a cheque for fifty quid. If you cultivate the media and you do it twelve times a week, the income is equivalent to UK average wage. That’s not enough dosh so you need TV exposure and a newspaper column. The Guardian Comment is Free pays £50 to the nomarks and your best ex-insider comment is worth £200.
Unless you have great backup for the story about Downing Street orgies, that isn’t going to run. The success technique for wealth is to write as a liberal lefty about social issues. Not economics, not science, not business. Turn right a bit about your philosophy, which will boost your pay because it makes you become an edgy writer. Then get your Daily Mail contract.
