Joanna Lumley: Vote Green
Is the Green Party bandwagon gathering pace? After polls that consistently show the highest supporter numbers for a generation, the campaigner and actress Joanna Lumley has today come out in support of the party.
She tells the Evening Standard:
Caroline Lucas is a tireless campaigner in the European Parliament, staunchly defending human rights and strongly promoting greater protection for animals.
I urge you to cast a positive vote for a better future by voting Green in the European elections.

And the Daily Mail has even deigned to report the news (albeit throwing in the word ‘fringe’ as a spoiler). Wonders will never cease.

This was in the Green Party election leaflet I received several days ago. I don’t think they’ve even talked to her – it’s just what was printed a week or more ago. Hard to call it ‘news’.
Yep – lifted word for word from their site, posted 9 days ago. That was before her ‘final victory’, though.
I expect it’s the animal rights bit that did it for JL. I’m not sure if vegetarianism is a condition of Green Party membership but it’s not far off.
We’ll know the Greens are a serious Party when the Mail and the Sun start trashing them on a regular basis…
Good to know that Joanna agrees with my previous article on this site
I’m not a Veggie.
Looking after animals correctly should be part of all our agenda.
[5] Yes, look after them well… and then eat them. I like my steak-and-kidney pie, I do…
What a fucking tuff guy you are, Mike Killingworth.
David Brough, Mr Killingworth isn’t the one who feels the need to swear in every sentence. And it’s tough.
I am concerned that the Green Party get the endorsements of Respect, STWC & other fuckwits in this regard for having a line on anti-”Zionism” etc.
They seem to me not to be a vehicle for environmental conservation (which I support) but for a ragbag of far-left causes, few of which actually have anything to do with the environment.
Seeing this, people are put off the environmental effort. I doubt whether I’d be able to stomach these objections & vote for them, small-g green as I am.
I think this is quite an amusing story.
Lumley said on camera after the successful Gurkha campaign that she knows nothing about politics.
If this was true then her endorsement is meaningless.
On the other hand, in view that her outing as a Green party supporter was clearly preplanned to gain maximum impact (and her support of the party was an open secret) then she was being extremely disingenuous and her first party political act is to betray in herself all those traits complained about by the public in the wider political class.
In so doing Lumley has declared open season on investigations into her private affairs and I now expect her to be subject to equal levels of scrutiny as all public representatives.
For one I will take no pleasure in the disclosure of her youthful use of the casting couch as a prop to get jobs.
If she is any more than a vacuous celebrity airhead socialite who enjoys the champagne lifestyle, then why has she not used her profile to bring attention to other worthy causes throughout her long career?
Can we be sure that a celebrity endorsement is a vote winner or a vote loser in the current febrile climate?
There is one thing that is certain: the Green Party are a bunch of hypocrites – they have turned grey after having consistently (and sanctimoniously) denounced others for exactly that. They simply cannot be trusted.
So Greens had better enjoy this moment in the limelight. After the bows the critics always file their reviews.
Anyway, in my book Lumley comes a distant third behind both Diana Rigg and Honor Blackman.
