Good grief, but the G20 protests are kicking up some action. According to Red Pepper’s tweeter-on-the-ground, all you can hear is barking dogs and police helicopters, and it’s getting ugly. Like an idiot, I promised myself that I’d stay home and ohyes, get a lot of work done all day like a good girl. What’s actually happened is that I’ve been sat in front of the laptop getting wriggly, checking the news every thirty seconds, letting a succession of cups of tea go cold and wishing I was down on the streets.

Because I believe in the power of protest, and because this one in particular bloody fascinates me.

The second meeting of the G20 leaders in London tomorrow provides an opportunity for key global leaders to agree on a set of tangible measures to break the downward economic spiral of shrinking growth, falling trade, rising unemployment, and declining wages.

In London, much of the focus will be on measures-some of which were outlined earlier this month by finance ministers and central bankers-to address the stasis in financial markets and the causes of the current crisis. But Obama and other leaders must not shy away from three additional critical challenges: (1) ensuring a green recovery; (2) assisting the developing world; and (3) preventing a further slide toward protectionism.

Will the Afghanistan strategy work?

In one sense, the claim of responsibility from the Pakistani Taliban for Monday’s attack on the police school, is something of a relief; it means, that as yet, Lashkar-e-Toiba, another group founded by Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, has not declared war on the Pakistani state itself.

The other sort of good news from the attack was that a complete bloodbath was avoided thanks to the relatively swift intervention of the Pakistani security forces, those who had been criticised, probably unfairly, after the first Lahore attack. “Only” 11 dead, when there were up to 800 police recruits in the attacked compound, can be seen as something of a success.

DAILY BLOG REVIEW / by Lee Griffin

Think you’ve spotted a blog we should be linking to? EmailtipsATlcDOTorg and let us know!

Neil Stockley finds it’s hard not to focus on the MP’s expenses issue, perhaps to the extent too many “good” MPs are getting tarnished without warrant.

Andrew Reeves is concerned, however, that we don’t forget that the £100k+ expenses are actually mostly for funding their workforce.

Liberal Revolution feels that perhaps the Lib Dem MPs poo doest not pong, and the BBC is once again targeting them unfairly.

Simon Jenkins/CiF shows that the adage “If you are innocent you have nothing to fear” is utter bollocks, and now Jacqui Smith knows it.

Cornish Pip reflects on the future of social work and the truths about what to expect when properly protecting children.

The Sun Lies proves the Sun lies again, knowingly. Deliberate or are they just that institutionally slimy they don’t realise they’re doing it?

5CC on the tabloid language of “now”. All about religious firefighters being respected…
