
Good grief, but the G20 protests are kicking up some action. According to Red Pepper’s tweeter-on-the-ground, all you can hear is barking dogs and police helicopters, and it’s getting ugly. Like an idiot, I promised myself that I’d stay home and ohyes, get a lot of work done all day like a good girl. What’s actually happened is that I’ve been sat in front of the laptop getting wriggly, checking the news every thirty seconds, letting a succession of cups of tea go cold and wishing I was down on the streets.
Because I believe in the power of protest, and because this one in particular bloody fascinates me.

The second meeting of the G20 leaders in London tomorrow provides an opportunity for key global leaders to agree on a set of tangible measures to break the downward economic spiral of shrinking growth, falling trade, rising unemployment, and declining wages.
In London, much of the focus will be on measures-some of which were outlined earlier this month by finance ministers and central bankers-to address the stasis in financial markets and the causes of the current crisis. But Obama and other leaders must not shy away from three additional critical challenges: (1) ensuring a green recovery; (2) assisting the developing world; and (3) preventing a further slide toward protectionism.

In one sense, the claim of responsibility from the Pakistani Taliban for Monday’s attack on the police school, is something of a relief; it means, that as yet, Lashkar-e-Toiba, another group founded by Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, has not declared war on the Pakistani state itself.
The other sort of good news from the attack was that a complete bloodbath was avoided thanks to the relatively swift intervention of the Pakistani security forces, those who had been criticised, probably unfairly, after the first Lahore attack. “Only” 11 dead, when there were up to 800 police recruits in the attacked compound, can be seen as something of a success.
But there is much to fear from the continuing spiral into proactive insurgency in Pakistan.
