If Israel wants peace, why does it keep building settlements?
We were constantly told, by defenders of Israel’s recent invasion of Gaza, that the country was dedicated to peace and Hamas was the true obstacle to peace. That’s not necessarily the case; I think there are parties on both sides that have an interest in the continuing this conflict and avoiding a two-state solution.
And though Hamas’ rockets into Israel undeniably invite a retaliation, I also wonder why an Israel that wants peace would continue to build illegal settlements. Not only just build them, but expand them at a frightening rate.
Ha’aretz uncovered a major report a few weeks ago:
Here, for the first time, information the state has been hiding for years is revealed. An analysis of the data reveals that, in the vast majority of the settlements – about 75 percent – construction, sometimes on a large scale, has been carried out without the appropriate permits or contrary to the permits that were issued. The database also shows that, in more than 30 settlements, extensive construction of buildings and infrastructure (roads, schools, synagogues, yeshivas and even police stations) has been carried out on private lands belonging to Palestinian West Bank residents.
Then, a few days ago the Jerusalem Post also noted:
The number of new structures in the West Bank settlements and outposts increased by 69 percent in 2008, compared to 2007, according to a new study released by Peace Now on Tuesday evening.
Construction permits have been issued for a 950-unit project in Ma’aleh Adumim, according to Peace Now report. The report added that the settler population grew from 270,000 in 2007 to 285,000 in 2008.
The data collected by the group was published on the same day that the new US Middle East envoy George Mitchell was due to arrive in Israel and two weeks before the Knesset elections. The study charged that despite international agreements, the Kadima and Labor parties had allowed settlement growth to increase.
George Mitchell, as the article says, is Obama’s new envoy to the Middle East. When his name was first mooted, the Anti-Defamation League of the United States was annoyed. Why? Because he was too even-handed:
Sen. Mitchell is fair. He’s been meticulously even-handed. But the fact is, American policy in the Middle East hasn’t been ‘even handed’ — it has been supportive of Israel when it felt Israel needed critical U.S. support. So I’m concerned. I’m not sure the situation requires that kind of approach in the Middle East.
Yes, you read that right – the only diplomacy the ADL wants in the Middle East is one that is over-the-top supportive of Israel rather than even handed. I suppose it’s got something to do with that ridiculous notion of “moral equivalence” where Muslims can’t be compared to anyone because that would be unfair.
That aside, the recent war has thrown up two inevitable developments: it has strengthened extremists on both sides. Hamas has become even more popular, and right-wing parties in Israel more likely to win the next election. That in itself poses a problem because:
Of the three candidates for prime minister, Mr Netanyahu is the only one who does not endorse a two-state solution as advocated by the US — a Palestinian state and a Jewish state alongside each other.
Mr Netanyahu has said there are models for the Palestinians other than a state with complete sovereignty. “I would make sure that the Palestinians have the means to govern themselves but not to threaten the survival of the state of Israel,” he has said.
…
The biggest surprise of the campaign so far is the surge by the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party headed by Avigdor Lieberman, with 16 seats. Mr Lieberman advocates changing the country’s borders so as to leave a substantial number of Israeli Arabs living in the Palestinian state.
The idea that Israeli political parties alone wants peace and prosperity for both parties is untrue. Like any other country it is acting in self-interest. That does not include Palestinian prosperity as things stand, and any approach towards the Middle East should recognise that.
The American media is also slowly waking up to the fact

Why people think that Palestinian Jews have no permission to settle and live in their Holy Land? Why do you favor the Apartheid policy to cleanse the Land of Israel of Jews?
The Palestinian Arabs have already had their own national home in the East Bank. Just turn Jordan a democracy and the vast majority of Arab Palestinians will role their state by their own. They need not a second state on the account of The Jewish Palestinians.
The Only Peaceful Solution Available
———————————————-
As far as things going (or stocking) in the middle east I think that the only sane solution for the Palestinian problem is two states for two peoples, and not 3 or 4 states, as I hear people dream.
The 2 states solution is The Palestinian Jordan dwelled from the Arabian Desert in the east to the Jordan River it the west, and the Palestinian Jewish state of Israel from the Jordan River in the east to the sea shore in the west. There is no any other way to divide the small historical Palestine for two peoples. Jews in both states will vote for the Knesset in Jerusalem and Arabs in both states will vote for the Parliament in Amman. In the local scene Arabs will be equal citizens in their municipality as any definition. This is the basic and the only promised solution possible for solving the continuous conflict between Arabs and Jews there.
We all have to remember that Arab Palestinians want Israeli land but not Jews to live on it! So both peoples have to be separated de Iure, and keep living de facto with minimum changes in population’s moving. But if the Arabs still eager and continue launching their war against the Jews, they are all should be moved to Palestinian Jordan and leave the western part of Palestine for the Jews.
Why do you favor the Apartheid policy to cleanse the Land of Israel of Jews?
Busted Sunny, you awful Nazi you.
Back in reality, I think much of Israel’s current policy – quietly surrounding Jerusalem with settlements to ensure that the whole city will be theirs in any final peace settlement – is in large part down to the international community. For the last twenty years at least, western nations have been urging both the Israelis and the Palestinians to negotiate an eventual two-state solution, so it’s not really surprising that one side would lay the groundwork to make sure that they get the best deal possible.
Quite why we Brits and the Americans imagine that we can solve any festering conflict by stepping in and asking the combatants to be nicer to each other, I don’t know. Given our record, you’d think we’d have learnt by now that we’re not very good at such things.
If Hamas lay down their weapons, and never fire another rocket into Israel or carry out another suicide bombing what will happen?
Answer….
Israel will keep stealing their land, and building more settlements. there is also the issue of the gas that is in Palestine waters, which Israel has prevented them from exploiting. Of course the excuse is that they will use the profit to buy weapons. (funny the same argument never applies to Israel buying F16 fighter planes and Apache gunship helicopters from America) But some people believe that Israel wants to steal the gas eventually.
This will just go on, and on until all Palestinians have either been killed off, or starved to death or have fled into other countries. They are dammed if they do dammed if they don’t.
And when that day comes watch out other Arab countries that boarder Israel, because they will come and steal your land as well. All in the name of Defence of course.
You ask: we answer – because if the ‘facts on the ground’ include a group of Israeli settlers, then the ground ‘belongs’ to them. It’s a land grab, pure and simple: it just helps if you’ve got the backing of a fully militarised nation state – but that’s enough about the USA.
From the Nile to the Euphrates dear boy, Nile to the Euphrates.
If Israel wants peace, why does it keep building settlements?
Come on guys – You know the answer. Israel has no interest in the Palestinians or their land. They simply want to get rid of them all so they can proceed with ‘God Plan’ for them.
No country has the right to exist on the basis that another country has to forfeit their right to exist. On current form Israel has forfeited their right to exist.
Because in practice western governments don’t tell Israel to stop. Because in practice western governments have been able to use ambiguous phrase like “road map” or “peace process” rather than “implementation of the relevant UN resolutions” to hide from themselves the illegality of the settlements on the West Bank and the centrality of this issue in the Middle East.
I wrote this article a short while ago. It can be found here:

I submitted it to Sunny but apparently it would result in the same old rows. I didn’t mind, it was his website after all, but it’s interesting how him saying it won’t.
At any rate, we are both correct with regards the Israeli Right (who Kadima should be seen as a realist strain of, rather than “Centrists”: the *stated* aim in returning the Gaza Strip to the Palestinians was to ensure that the West Bank and other territories could be retained by the Israelis, the hand-over was described as “Formaldyhyde” for the Palestinian process by one of the architects).
Elements of Israel want victory rather than peace and at present those elements run the country. Israel has one of the most powerful military forces in the world so if Israel is run by people who do not wish for peace, peace will not happen.
It’s fairly simple.
I also wonder why an Israel that wants peace would continue to build illegal settlements.
Because as well as wanting peace, Israel wants to continue stealinbg the Palestinians’ land. To put it bluntly, the sort of peace israel wants amounts to “stop struggling while I continue to rape you”.
I have no facts to back up this comment; it is purely a suspicion thought of mine, but I honestly think that these settlements are being put there because they expect a peace deal. If they didn’t have settlements the peace deal wold insist that their wall was shifted a few metres to the left or this or that or the other. The Israelis aren’t stupid; they know that the negotiation will be about the removal of these settlements and that the Americans will pay for this.
It may sound like an odd idea, but deal making in this part of the world is without doubt the drtiest negotiations you’d ever find. I’ve honestly racked my brains and I can’t see any other reasonable explanation for these settlements. Even if the Israelis don’t believe that peace will be a reality, they’re not completely stupid. They’re building in preperation of a future demolition, but on their terms.
Even if the Israelis don’t believe that peace will be a reality, they’re not completely stupid. They’re building in preperation of a future demolition, but on their terms.
Dan I’ve thought about this and I think this is a possible explanation…. though if you go by the video above and see the settler’s convictions, I think it can also be blamed on the Israeli government not having the backbone to stand up against many settlers who are driven by Biblical mission.
No doubt they will form part of the negotiations, but its a risky strategy given how much internal discord there was over demolishing the last round of settlements…
There’s a lot of talk about Palestinians fleeing to other countries, but you should realise that the other Arab countries don’t want them. Egypt refuses to remove its army from the border while Hamas is in control of it. Back in the days following ’67 Jordan refused to accept Palestinians unless they had a Jordanian passport (get it?) . In fairness there was a big movement of people and maybe the Hussein simply wanted to stem the flow, but then Arafat and his mates started taking over Jordan with militias and tried to assasinate him. Welcome to the wonderful world of Palestinian self-rule; you give them asylum and they shoot you.
I must say though, Sunny, that video is pretty shocking stuff. The beefy woman pops up in news items all the time, but even if you take her extremism out of the equation, I feel that its pretty difficult to have any sympathy with what the Israelis are doing there at all. But then I think about the 200 suicide bombers causing the death of 1,000 people. Not exactly a call for dialogue, was it? That wall and those security measures certainly ended the suicide bombers and if you ask the Israelis to reduce the oppressive security measures, they’ll point to their pull-out from Gaza and the immediate rain of missiles.
Whatever the truth is, there’s no doubt that a considerable part of Israeli policy is punishment. I don’t think that can be morally justified whatever the case.
Israel “wants peace” ..Hamas,Hezbollah and their master Iran wants its complete destruction. Now tell me! how would you deal with those fanatics whose only aim is to kill you. Obama is going to face this truth now he is President and not on the campaign trail. Dictators(and these three are religious dictators) see talking as a weakness and while the talk is going on arms are being stockpiled or in the case of Iran the nuclear bomb is getting much closer. Europe persuaded Bush not to act against Iran as they were sure diplomacy would change Iran’s mind but after 8 years it has failed. Hamas tortured and killed its own people back in 06 and the only chance of peace is with Abbas and the Palestinian authority. The problem with liberals/left is the hatred for Israel is so intense that it blinds their eyes to these fanatics and the old adage is true.that “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
