You are perfectly free, madam, to say that any religion is an acceptable target for mockery, as I am equally free to point out that the kind of mockery meted out to some of them is indicative of certain ignorant parochial prejudices and free furthermore, to observe that daring young iconoclasts are apt to pull their punches when it comes to some religions while making others their whipping boy.

Hence your fatuous comments about “Popey” making a “sexist arse of himself”, simply because prominent Catholic scientists, not, nota bene, His Holiness himself, pointed out the deleterious effects of the contraceptive pill on the environment.

And hence your vulgar choice of words about someone you clearly konw very little about. You may imagine that referring to the Pope as a twat is mockery, I’d just call it childish.

I mean – you chose him, not us.

Perhaps that’s one of your feeble attempts at mockery. In point of fact we believe that the Holy Spirit chooses Peter’s successor; we do not flatter ourselves that we have any role in the matter.

Though I feel you make many valid points on the matter, I would argue that you are missing some crucial points and most importantly I would like to question whether you have actually read the Vatican statement or taken your source as 100% authentic.

I would like to draw your attention to this and I would greatly appreciate a reply.

I do not believe or agree with your view that the Vatican is being sexist. One could say that your reference to the Hitler Youth is irrelevant to your line of argument. I do however, feel that the views on contraceptives in general are important to consider and one that we should bring into discussion and debate so that religion and state laws can reconcile.

Although really, Laurie, there was almost no need to write it out. You could’ve stopped at:

I will personally commit to blogging on the topic myself if one or other ayatollah around the place comes out against girl piddle. Even if that were true, it wouldn’t on its own make her wrong on this specific point, would it? If that’s the extent of your argument you may as well say “The Pope is wrong, but it’s unfair to say so”.

What’s depressing is that many of those attacking God’s Rotweiler on this case will still real him out as a moral authority if he just happens to share our opinion on other matters, such as the Invasion of Iraq.

The same happens with the Royal family: one minute Prince Charles is a reactionary old fart, the next he’s an authority on GM food.

Somebody call Greenpeace and ask them to demand the banning of golden showers.
