What is there that is inherently less tenable about a Jewish homeland than a Greek homeland, a Turkish homeland, an Armenian homeland or for any other group? Sure the emergence of any nation in the Middle East (and usually anywhere in the world) has coincided with widespread violence and often massacres but it is not as if an obviously better way of running societies has yet been worked out. In absence of anarchist syndicates or whatever else (which I am all in favour of exploring), the other options are either empires or tribes which are not obviously less violence than nation states.

Well, that neither will nor should happen.

And how long would the "guarantors" have to stick around?!

I doubt there is any future for a "two state" solution. So long as the principle of a Jewish state is accepted the grievance will continue. The British government should say that it regrets and repudiates the Balfour declaration (which gave the green light for the creation of a "Jewish homeland") and will work towards a Condominium of Israel and Palestine in which the international community guarantees the civic and religious liberties of both communities within a single state.
