Why is New Statesman not recognising the NUJ?
Word has reached Liberal Conspiracy that journalists within the venerable left-wing magazine are not happy that it has yet to officially recognise the National Union of Journalists union.
The magazine has been undergoing editorial changes as new editor Jason Cowley took over from Sue Matthias, appointed acting editor when John Kampfner left. In October its US editor, Andrew Stephen, resigned. Cowley has also axed columns by Darcus Howe, Julian Clary and Ziauddin Sardar and hired James Macintyre from the Independent as a political correspondent. Martin Bright remains political editor.
LC has heard from more than one source that many staff considered the snub of the NUJ “outrageous”. Chapel members are considering contacting trade union advertisers with the New Statesman to put pressure on the management for recognition. The left of centre mag produces the TUC supplement every year.
But a magazine spokesperson, when contacted, said they were trying to resolve it. “No official position has been reached and the proprietors are still in discussion on the matter,” I was told.
It’s only right to ask why a left-of-centre magazine is taking so long in recognising the NUJ. An official statement by the union will be sent over to us tomorrow.

Did anyone half expect Sunny to finish the above by looking to another camera and saying “And now here’s Tom with the weather.”?
They’ve axed Sardar? Someone pinch me!
Multimillionaire Mike Danson is the co-owner (with Robinson) of the New Statesman (and some reports suggest Danson will fully take full ownership at some point).
Danson also owns Labourhome, and promotes NS at Labourhome. There is no mention of Danson owning Labourhome in the About section at Labourhome. It just states that Labourhome was “started by Alex Hilton and Jag Singh”. According to one report I have heard, Hilton now works at the NS offices.
It’s interesting that both the NS and Labourhome are owned and controlled by a multimillionaire who does not currently recognise the NUJ at NS. It’s also interesting to note that Danson’s ownership of Labourhome, a supposedly “grassroots” blog, is not stated at Labourhome, which still gives the impression it is owned and controlled as grassroots type of operation. It’s not. It’s part of a millionaire’s publishing stable, and will be used in part to promote NS.
Interesting Benjamin-
When it comes to media bungs surely the scandal of £800,000,000 pa wasted on advertising public sector appointments (eg the £75,000 we apparently have spare to chuck at an “ Assistant Director of Equality and Human Rights “ for NHS Nottingham ). This could be lost at a stroke as could many of the stupid fake jobs . It would bankrupt the Guardian so its win win win
At a time like this with homes being lost and belts tightened it is beyond belief that New Labour feel they can squander so much tax payers money on soft political funding via the Guardian . One web site could do it for next to nothing but the fact the Public sector continues to spit in the face of the suffering tax payer at all with its expanding sinecure empire is a cause for bloody insurrection , if not prolonged whining .
@ Newmania: no it couldn’t. Suggesting that ‘a website’ could handle public sector job ads is patent nonsense to anyone who’s ever recruited for anything; and suggesting that it’d cost much less than the current system is patent nonsense to anyone who’s ever worked in web development/project management.
(that isn’t to say the jobs themselves are worthwhile, but that’s a different question, and it’s one which has zero relevance to the one of how they’re advertised…)
What is it with moronic right wing, knuckle dragging trolls? They just can’t keep away from Liberal publications. I was just reading The Guardian site ,and Polly’s latest column. It is infected with trolls throwing their shit at the screen. It is both hilarious, and slightly worrying how completely unhinged the right wing has become. There is a hatred that is positively fascist in outlook. .
