Let’s face it, almost all of the pro-gay moves by New Labour have been in response to pressure, direct or indirect, from the European Court of Justice.
Ms Smith is simply showing their own underlying attitudes. Apart form all else, john.b’s post at 11.19 showed up the obvious fallacy in the government’s stance.

The worst thing is that someone makes a misguided response to an asinine comment and they get fired from their role in the London Mayor office, but Smith says shit like this and the wider media, and therefore the cabinet, do nothing to reprimand her on such language.

Aside from anything else, even if gays and lesbians are safe-ish in the closet in Iran, someone who’s been deported back to Iran after trying to claim asylum in the UK for being gay is hardly in the “safe, closeted, not attracting the attention of the authorities” bracket.

Surely if this is their argument there should be no asylum seekers at all. Persecuted because of your religion? Keep quiet, you’ll be fine. Persecuted because of your belief in democracy? Just pretend you support the violent dictators, you’ll be fine. Being forced to run for your life because you insulted the wrong person, such as a vengeful, corrupt politician? Well that was stupid you should of kept quiet!
