Welcome to Casting the net, Liberal Conspiracy’s daily web review. As always, please feel free to share your own recommendations in the comments section. Today’s links could care less what you do with them once they’re dead. Why? Because they’d be dead.

Organ Grinding
Watch out for Dizzy “Thinks” accusing Justin of writing an “intellectually vapid piece”. Apparently, Justin now refuses to come out of his room until Dizzy apologises.

Justin McKeating – Monkeys and the organ minder
Cassilis – After death there is no ‘you’…
Polly Toynbee/CiF – Living people matter. When you’re dead, you’re dead
Bob Piper – Mouth… organs
Libby Purves/Times – Whose body is it anyway?
Dizzy Thinks – Lots of nonsense on organ donations from Liberal Conspiracy and elsewhere
Iain Dale – Brown Wants to Nationalise Our Bodies
The Diary of Chris K – The Organ Grinder…
The Yorksher Gob – Organ Donation
Sim-O’s Random Thoughts – What to do with the offal?
Thomas Sutcliffe – Have a heart and sign up to organ donation
Tony’s Blog – Much offal
Vino S – In favour of an ‘opt-out’ system of organ donation

So, how about this: we let the Tories win this one, and the dead are burned and buried, complete with all their gooey bits. Oh, and more people die. What a result, eh?

Oh FFS – here we go again, not that LC is a *party* political site, oh no…

I don’t think the organ thing is a Tory / Lab issue is it?

I agree. It’s more of a counter-Enlightenment / Enlightenment issue.

Lighten up dude. I’m certainly not being party political (see here for my thoughts of Mr. Brown), it’s just that most of the faux-outrage appears to be coming from the Tory bloggers.

I’d add Matt SInclair’s post to the group http://sinclairsmusings.blogspot.com/2008/01/i-have-to-believe-that-when-my-eyes-are.html

How is it an enlightenment/counter enlightenment issue Justin? I’d have thought the argument that we own our own bodies is a very Lockian one- whereas the argument that our bodies and ourselves by extension are only useful as part of a whole is more of a Romantic position. This is one I’m still thinking through- but I don’t think the answer is simple.

Great post Ian, cheers for the link

The more I see of this debate, the more I wonder what it would have looked like if the proposal to presume consent had been made by the Tories.

As another thought: to what other areas should the doctrine of presumed consent by extended?

Medical procedures? Taxes? Charitable donations? Life insurance?

Well there is already presumed consent for simple medical procedures so there’s nothing new here…and what exactly is optional about paying your taxes in todays world? :P

Comrade, we presume you consent to give the state 100% of your income. If you wish to opt out, here is a fifteen thousand page form to fill in.
